Re: Portal time 25-26
He wasn’t technically named the starter for the bowl game. Dowell said if the game was today, Kohl would be the starter. The game is 12/29 and no install has occurred.

I’m hoping this is because Loggains simply told him he wouldn’t be starting next year. Hope they someone lined up in the portal

Re: Portal time 25-26
I also don't see this as ridiculous. If he's the starter, that means he's still playing until the season officially ends. It would be ridiculous if he entered the portal and refused to play- basically quitting on the team.rbarthle17 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 15, 2025 1:57 pmIt's only ridiculous in terms of the environment being what it is. For Kohl, and any other G5 player that had even a decent season, putting your name in the portal and seeing what happens is just smart business. Portal doesn't mean they are leaving, they are just officially seeing what's out there. They might still return.

I think, in the grand scheme of things, CFB is crazy. Free agency after every year. Even the NFL does not work under this model.
For the long-term success of the sport, something has to change whereby you cannot be a free agent every year.
Not sure of the solution, however, something has to change.. or CFB may see a downward trend in popularity faster than NASCAR.

Re: Portal time 25-26
Just found this article on Kohl. Interesting part toward the very end of the article,
"Kohl wasn't guaranteed to be the starter at Appalachian State in 2026. He'll likely be searching for a scenario where he'll be able to command a quarterback room and play a ton of snaps next season."
If the guy isn't always willing to compete then good riddance. I am so tired of these younger entitled people (painting with a very broad brush here) that feel they need guarantees of things in order to participate. What ever happened to competition? I want a player that thrives on competition, not one that hides from it. Also, if he was really the #11 QB prospect in the country when he came out, well those ratings are even more inaccurate than I thought they were.

Well, Loggains has been saying they want Smart, Tough, and Competitive. Guess JJ isn't that last one and the second is questionable after seeing him turtle up short of a first down on a run

Re: Portal time 25-26
Dowell has said repeatedly they're giving out opportunities and nothing is guaranteed. It's a good principle, but it's a hard one to maintain.t4pizza wrote: ↑Mon Dec 15, 2025 3:21 pmJust found this article on Kohl. Interesting part toward the very end of the article,

Just got done with a Microdisectemy.
I don’t know if I can suit up at QB for the bowl game quite yet, but maybe by next year I’ll be ready for QB clipboard holder. I can be a good clapper and “butt slapper”

Ugh. Another one.
DJ Burks portaling.
If Hayes Fawcett posts about you, you’re going P4-5.

Even though losing Burks hurts us, I'm ok with that one. He gave us 4 years already. He worked his way up. Some NFL teams might kick the tires on him but won't be throwing tons of money at him. Hes got the college stats now. Let him go get one pay day before its all over.

Re: Portal time 25-26
Do they really have ties to Boone either?
On the weekly show at the Ale House, when asked what they like to do when not football, there are some that mention hiking, fishing, etc
Many talk about hanging with teammates/playing video games, versus experiencing what The High Country has to offer. .. and it seems the 3 to 4 year guys have experienced The High Country versus the transfer guys not so much . Just an observation.

Re: Portal time 25-26
The last few weeks has gotten me to a point where I’m numb to it now. Dudes just jumping in the portal to see if someone offers them more money, or because they don’t want to put the work in to climb the death chart, it gets old. If you don’t want to be here… Bye. That’s where I’m at, at this point.
Just tell me who’s lining up in two weeks at the bowl game. I will root like heck for those guys. Then cross my fingers and hope DLO backfills all these spots with even better players.
GO APPS!!

Re: Portal time 25-26
There is no doubt that most have no ties to what the area has to offer, either. Many of the "stars" aren't outdoorsmen. But calling them student athletes is disingenuous. We might as well be Podunk State.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Tue Dec 16, 2025 8:30 amDo they really have ties to Boone either?

Re: Portal time 25-26
I guess I’m more in the minority that looks at this list of departures and isn’t too bothered. Porter and Dozier were the two that hurt me the most but the others have been far too inconsistent. 10-15 of them haven’t even seen the field. You can’t fault a kid for wanting to go somewhere to play when it becomes evident it won’t be here.
