Re: FB at No. 24 JMU, 3:30 p.m., ESPN+
People need to calm down with firing the coaching staff after one season. It's reactionary and emotional.
This season has been one to forget for sure, but how many times did we have to listen to tirades and defenses of this hiring (or about getting rid of Coach Clark) because of how bad the roster was? They turned over 2/3 of the roster and it's clear that there have been few bright spots from that turnover. But if all this season was supposed to be was cleaning out all the old to make room for the new, as so many of you claimed was the main goal, then that was done.
Next year can fairly be assessed as a make or break year for the coaches. We will have a full influx of their players and a year of experience under their belts. If we still see these same issues, then cutting this experiment short would be warranted.

I don't do the books so I don't know but we claim to be a football school, we allocate the VAST majority of our resources to our football team at the slight of every other athletic team on campus. if we are going to do that, then we need to be all in and do it well. No need to keep a coach that clearly cannot get it done and puts out a program that is bordering on historically bad. If we can't do it, or won't do it for financial reasons, then I say we stop pretending to be something we are not and reallocate some significant resources to other sports to really give them a chance to compete. This product does deserve a repeat performance.

Counterpoint- our roster is likely to be turned over at that rate every year. This is the new CFB landscaperbarthle17 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 9:43 pmPeople need to calm down with firing the coaching staff after one season. It's reactionary and emotional.

Re: FB at No. 24 JMU, 3:30 p.m., ESPN+
Last year JMU turned their roster over even more than we did this year. JMU added 63 players last year, another 50 this year, but they continued winning. Cig gutted their team when he left and took the talent to Indiana, but they got a proven coach and picked up his type of guys and still had a good winning season. Now in year 2 they are on the brink of the playoffs. Why couldn't that be us? Other than the fact we hired an unproven first-time head coach with a career losing coaching record. There is no good reason to keep a coach that can't get the job done, and everyone can see it.rbarthle17 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 9:43 pmPeople need to calm down with firing the coaching staff after one season. If you want to say hold off on the firing that’s fine, but you are completely giving DLO a pass for the absolute embarrassment this team has become. And i bet many on here would be a lot more comfortable with the whole “when his guys get here” stance if this year’s team had shown any level of improvement in any area. But the exact opposite has been true and this team has regressed mightily and that’s 100% coaching. I’m having difficulty with the notion That it doesn’t matter how bad this DLO coached team plays because next year we are going to see some amazing turn around from a guy who’s not shown the slightest ability that he’s up for this job.

Unlike some it seems, I'm willing to give people a chance to learn from their mistakes, especially when it's their first time in that position.Seattleapp wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 9:59 pmIf you want to say hold off on the firing that’s fine, but you are completely giving DLO a pass for the absolute embarrassment this team has become. It’s gonna be a new team every year. Same coaches will have same results. Failed NFL guys won’t get it done.

That’s fair. Full disclosure I wasn’t a fan of this hire so I’m sure I’m guilty of being overly critical.rbarthle17 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 10:04 pmUnlike some it seems, I'm willing to give people a chance to learn from their mistakes, especially when it's their first time in that position.Seattleapp wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 9:59 pmIf you want to say hold off on the firing that’s fine, but you are completely giving DLO a pass for the absolute embarrassment this team has become. Re: FB at No. 24 JMU, 3:30 p.m., ESPN+
Have you seen anything from him this season that suggests that he has learned anything from his mistakes? The team has regressed. We make the same exact mistakes that we made in the first 3 games. Shouldn't we have seen some indication of learning from mistakes and some level of improvement if he truly had that capability? Coming into the season I didn't know what to expect, but I wanted to see improvement and assumed that by the end of the season we would be a better team than we were at the beginning of the season. I thought that the staff would learn and get better. But that has not happened, in fact the exact opposite has happened, and we have gotten worse as the season progressed. That is not indicative of an individual that learns from their mistakes. One extra year is one too many.rbarthle17 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 10:04 pmUnlike some it seems, I'm willing to give people a chance to learn from their mistakes, especially when it's their first time in that position.Seattleapp wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 9:59 pmIf you want to say hold off on the firing that’s fine, but you are completely giving DLO a pass for the absolute embarrassment this team has become. Also, look at his history. Is there anything on his resume that suggests learning and improving? He has a career losing record on staffs by a long shot and was voted the worst OC in the NFL. This isn't an unknown commodity now; he has a career worth of showing that he doesn't learn from mistakes and improve. If he did, he would still be in the NFL.

Re: FB at No. 24 JMU, 3:30 p.m., ESPN+
So his buyout is $1.5M. If our average ticket price is around $65 when you factor in season ticket per game rates then we'd only need to see a drop of around 3,850 tickets sold per game for six home games to equal that $1.5M total. That doesn't even factor in concessions and merch sold during the game. A change is not unaffordable if we truly need to make one.

Like that failed NFL coach Nick Saban never got it done in college? Or that failed NFL coach Steve Spurrier?NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 10:10 pmIt’s gonna be a new team every year. Same coaches will have same results. Failed NFL guys won’t get it done.
Tongue in cheek examples, obviously. But if all you are going to give people is one chance at a new job position they have never held before to prove themselves, you're in for a lot of disappointment.
I hope in your career you never made mistakes the first time given a new position, stones and glass houses and such.
Of course it has been about as bad a first year of head coaching as it can be, I'm not arguing that. I don't agree that we know for certain he can't get it done. What you can say is he has backed himself into a corner where all goodwill is gone and he has one make or break year left to prove himself. If that's beyond your capabilities to give someone, then we see the world very differently.

He’s trending downwards, there’s not only been no improvement, but I’d say we are worse now than beginning of season. Playcalls are terrible, same mistakes continue (or increased), the team plays with no passion. He’s got another year, but that just means my Saturdays will be freed up next fall.rbarthle17 wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 10:17 pmLike that failed NFL coach Nick Saban never got it done in college? I will say I think the play calling has been predictable (re: not good) is because we have no oline. At some point we will figure that out, but we have to pay for a line. Moreso than any other position.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Sat Nov 15, 2025 10:26 pmHe’s trending downwards, there’s not only been no improvement, but I’d say we are worse now than beginning of season.
