Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
A good many people look at the portal and assume that the overall reason to enter is NIL. I can understand that thought but I can’t agree with it. Every team across each sport has exit meetings with the current roster to discuss their current roles, future roles opportunities to improve and their overall fit in the system. Sometimes, the kid isn’t a fit for the system and sometimes the school isn’t a fit for the kid. Sometimes kids want different roles than the one the coach has envisioned for them and the kid can’t commit to it. Sometimes the kid reaches a ceiling on their value and contribution level and cutting them loose is the best thing for all. My point is that we don’t always know why someone entered the portal. One of my main reasons for resisting the notion that NIL is the primary driver is when I look at the roster turnover at schools like Duke, UNC and this year’s Final 4 participant Alabama from guys entering the portal. Yes, they can spend money to replace the departed, but was money an issue for those leaving?

Do not know the kid or his desires...just a general bball comment...more often times than not...if you are a shoot first player...not ideal for that position....as you should be first a facilitator and distributor first mentality..just an opinionAppSt94 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 9:28 amFor sure.NattyBumppo'sRevenge wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 8:51 amIf that kid that scored 100 points against us from half court is still with Asheville next season, pairing Marsh up with him would result in record breaking shots taken in a game.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 8:40 amTo put it simply, he had a specific role on the team and he wouldn’t play in the parameters of said role. What you described as his role is based off what it looked like from the stands. That wasn’t it.311neers wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 8:30 amThis is very interesting because was his role not to "come in, shoot the ball, drive to the hoop and get us back in the game??" And now they're telling him to be a PG and handcuffing him? Situations, rolls and rosters change every year though so if that's his new role, I would have transferred too. He's a scorer, not a slow it down and dish the ball-I assume they knew that when recruiting him.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 7:49 am
He was a PG, a Freshman PG at that, and led the team in shots taken per minute played. He put up .46 shots per minutes played. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but the next highest was .37. Gregory was .33 per minute for comparison. Many of them ill advised. That’s not what you need from your PG. My understanding is that he didn’t want to be a PG rather a SG and you can’t be a 5’9” SG in Division 1 basketball.
He was what my generation called a “gun bunny”.
Hate to see him go, he will run it up in Asheville with their style of play. Kerns will find a replacement and probably already has with the 2 guards coming in.

He also scored more per minute than anyone else. Well, he's still a D1 basketball player, what position is he going to play at UNCA?AppSt94 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 7:49 amHe was a PG, a Freshman PG at that, and led the team in shots taken per minute played. Well one would correlate with the other. That doesn’t make it a good thing. When you are asked and instructed to operate in the framework of a game plan that everyone has prepared for and you routinely ignore said instructions, that’s a problem.hapapp wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 11:39 amHe also scored more per minute than anyone else. Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
I don't feel like we are at a luxury where we can run good players off because they don't play within a system, even though from the stands it looks like he was doing his job; get us back in the game and score. Everyone takes bad shots, not just Marsh. Marsh single handedly won us some games last year.hapapp wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 11:39 amHe also scored more per minute than anyone else. Kerns is a good coach that seems to be set in his ways. That way might run some players off and might keep some others. Just one of the many reasons kids will enter the portal. Here's to hoping this doesn't become a trend.

Seemed like it was a good thing and was working...we went 27-7.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 11:52 amWell one would correlate with the other. That doesn’t make it a good thing. So when Tate, X Brown and Marsh were all in a lineup together, do all 3 play point guard and not shoot? We trotted that lineup out frequently...he looks like the 2 guard to me there. He played a good bit with other point guards on the court, whether that was X or Tate or both at the same time.
Marsh is a goner though, don't want to harp on him too much as we apparently just landed a new Mountaineer!

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
New commit is from Hickory. He played combo forward/guard but I am guessing he will be a guard for us? If Huntley returns we have 11 so far. Just need 2 more to fill out roster completely.311neers wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 12:47 pmSeemed like it was a good thing and was working...we went 27-7.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 11:52 amWell one would correlate with the other. Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
Would you list the 11? I can't keep up with who is here and who is gone. Just a list of who we expect to have next year at this point.
It sounds like we may be going small next year.

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
I’m just passing a long what I was told by the man most qualified to make those comments. Not looking to engage in a back and forth on this. We all see what we see and draw our conclusions based off of that. I asked why Marsh didn’t play much in the second half of the Wake game and this is what I got.311neers wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 12:47 pmSeemed like it was a good thing and was working...we went 27-7.AppSt94 wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 11:52 amWell one would correlate with the other. Agree. We are good enough but if we could sign one more guy who is 6'10 or taller then we would really be stacked. I would love to have 4 guys who are 6'9 or bigger.
Kobe Julien to Arkansas State is a big deal. I would say they are the definite favorite right now.

We agree on Arky , even before Julien. It’s a one bid league though and we’ve seen how that works. I think we will contend and it’s going to be whoever peaks at the right time.Keep an eye on ODU…

The years were announced but not money or buyout. I heard that the buyout is much higher than it was and close to what we would want but I don't know for sure. Has anyone seen what the exact buyout is for Kerns?311neers wrote: ↑Mon Apr 22, 2024 5:06 pmHave we seen the terms of Kerns extension? He’s milking it!
Crystal balled to UGA by a few insiders.
Can we get UGA on the schedule? Winnable and probably could get a good App crowd from Greenville/Atlanta.

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
Why are some of you obsessed with tracking Abson and Spillers and want to play them for revenge? To show them they made a mistake? We might not like that he left but you have to admit you would have done the same thing so why be upset about it. What Abson does this coming season does not really effect us and it should not bother us.
Kobe Julien from ULL to Arkansas State in the portal effects us more than Abson because Julien is going to a team that should be the favorite in the league and we need to get revenge on them for derailing our NCAA hopes.
I think our roster is coming together nicely and I feel like the players who want to be here deserve our support.

Re: Portal season (Abson, Spillers, etc)
Winnable? Sure. However, UGA is by no means a bad team. They faded down the stretch in conference play, but then went on to the NIT Final Four. They beat Wake at the beginning of the season.
