Re: Any word on how our 2022 FA's are doing?
FROM SBnation:
Demetrius Taylor makes a case
"Speaking of defensive linemen making a mark, how about Demetrius Taylor? The undrafted rookie stood out on defense, and not just because he was the lone defender with a number in the 60s. With Levi Onwuzurike injured and Michael Brockers not playing, Taylor slotted in as the 3-, 4- and 5-tech in the Lions front. He was frequently causing a ruckus in the backfield:
Taylor’s top competition for a roster spot is Jashon Cornell, who struggled in the first preseason game and was blanked from the stat sheet in the second. The Lions’ run defense was very impressive against the Colts, allowing just 30 yards on 18 carries, so Cornell does deserve some credit, but it was Taylor that popped on initial viewing. He may be on the outside looking in, but he’s making progress towards a roster spot."

It appears Jalen Virgil is gonna make the Broncos roster too. Only one cut left I think.

I would expect him to make the practice squad. He has been too good not to at least make that, unless another team picks him up for their 53.
I know someone on 247 said he could not be on the PS but they changed rules in 2020 and while 10 of the 16 spots have to be a rookie or 2nd-year player the other 6 spots have no limits.

If he somehow does then that is an upset. I fully expected him to make the PS now due to it being expanded and his special teams ability along with speed.
If anyone had said back in April that Corey would not be on a roster and Virgil would be the one on the 53 between the two I don't think anyone would have made that bet. Some might have thought both would but nobody would have figured just 1 and that 1 being Virgil between those 2. lol

Article on Panthers 53 man roster said they hated that good ones like Hayes would be cut. Would expect him to land somewhere.

I know I am probably in the minority, but I am not surprised that Virgil is the only one of our receivers to make the squad. The NFL is such a metric system and his speed just can't be taught. I told my brother last season that I wouldn't be surprised if Virgil, the perceived worst of the 4 super senior receivers at App, turned out to be the best pro prospect. Same reason that Dexter went in the third round and managed to collect NFL paychecks for a few years. NFL loves speed and Virgil has that and more. I always thought we underutilized him despite the other talent at that position.

I hate that but this is not really a shock. Evans is good but does not have a trait that you can't find for his size or size that is hard to find. I remember posting on here he was more of a 5th round guy and should have stayed. Titans definitely reached. Unless he still has not rehabbed fully and is still hurt it really is a shame for an early entry who went 3rd round to be getting cut just 2 years after leaving.

Yea t4pizza….. we did underutilize him. I think Coach Clark soured on him and kind of stayed in his doghouse…. he was always the 4th wr even though he was the fastest player…hmm…. I think he has much greater upside…. If he keeps working at his craft. Congrats to Jalen!!

I don't think anyone thought he was the worst in talent but just frustrated he was the least productive. I wondered if it was him or coaching because we all expected more. I thought it came down to his blocking, injuries, and perhaps the fact he had not developed his routes. Hennigan and Williams were good and dependable but lacked speed or any special traits. Sutton is the one shock but the injury is definitely the reason he is not still playing. I am really happy for Virgil. If he can be more consistent with his hands and continue to improve his routes then he should be able to carve out a career. Worst case he should latch on due to his speed giving a great look in practice and the fact he is a lethal return man.t4pizza wrote: ↑Tue Aug 30, 2022 3:34 pmI know I am probably in the minority, but I am not surprised that Virgil is the only one of our receivers to make the squad. AppStfan1 Evans situation isn’t as bad as some… look at the Raiders cut Alex Leatherwood from Bama was a 17th pick in the first round got cut today…. Evans will still catch on… maybe practice squad…

Oh there are definitely worse out there. He should have stayed as well and many said at the time that Alex was drafted too high. He should have gone in the third round. It still would have been as bad as it has been for Evans. Evans should latch on a practice squad though. Luckily there are no longer limits on experience to be on one.

If Virgil was healthy and worked on his blocking, he would have been used way more. He was often injured and his down field blocking was to be desired.AppFan11 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 30, 2022 3:49 pmYea t4pizza….. we did underutilize him. Just curious, what factual evidence do you have that coach soured on Virgil? ...and what factual evidence do you have that Virgil was in his doghouse?AppFan11 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 30, 2022 3:49 pmYea t4pizza….. we did underutilize him.
