I recall watching Lee Rose's UNCC hoops team with Corn Bread Maxwell do walk throughs in old Broome Kirk before they played Cremins team in Varsity Gym. I think that may have been the 1st live sporting event televised from our campus.
I was too young for college, but remember a group of us kids and adults from Avery county going to that game.

Back in my day at ASU we'd be playing pickup basketball in Broome-Kirk and Bobby Cremins would pull a chair up and watch his players play as he was sitting there. Who knows, maybe he was watching others looking for few walk-ons.
It was pretty cool.

Not quite sure I understand your question but Brooke Kirk and Varsity were 2 separate gyms, but connected. BK was built first and then Varsity was added on in 1968. BK was used for PE, intramurals, and practice when I was in school in the 80’s. Played a crap ton of pickup ball in BK and it had a great floor.
Yeah, I was early 2000s and BK and Varsity were always seperate. Awesome place to play pickup ball, and most intramural games were played there.
I might be wrong ( those years are hazy for a variety of reasons) but it might have been the first televised sporting event using satellite technology. Maybe anywhere not just NC.

The only thing I remember about BK was dropping 18 in an intramural BB game there in 93 for the team "Reigning Threes".

You're welcome

My fondest memory of BKG is winning the team handball championship in there. Came out of the loser's bracket and took two straight from the three-time defending, and undefeated champions.

Although I was not a part of this team back in the early/mid 70s there was The Orange Blossom Special. One evening they arranged a challenge game with the then "JV" team (walk ons, freshmen, etc) that had been "recruited." The OBS took care of business quite handily.
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

Do you guys recall the Pump Iron Training Society (PITS) out of Broome Kirk weight room? I had a t-shirt that was so cool with a extremely muscular YOSEF and gave it away to a girl I was dating at the time. Stupid!

Broome Kirk brings back tons of memories. Spent too many hours playing pick up basketball there from 72-76. Was in Watauga College in 1972, living in Watauga Hall (also torn down). The dorm had bath tubs, no showers, so I would shower every morning in BK Gym.

Great memories…sad these are all gone, along with Justice, where I was an RA FOR 3 years.

Yea, my sister lived in Watauga during the 71 - 72 school year. There was a tv show on that year called Room 222 which happened to be her room number. A guy that I went to high school with was in Watauga College with you in 72. I remember he would walk around bare footed that winter. Strange dude. I think he eventually dropped out because I started working for Hanes Corp in July after graduating and ran into him. He had a Hanes uniform on and was sweeping the floor. I did notice he had shoes on at that time...lol.

Had a front tooth knocked out playing basketball my freshman year (71) in B-K. When my face hit the floor I saw my tooth squirt out of my mouth and slide across the floor. I still have that cap in today, 50 years later!

I believe Varsity gym was completed in
1968. Was that the end of the gym being referred to as Broome Kirk?
I found sn old poster advertising
The Impressions appearing at Broome Kirk. Admission was 2.00.

Thanks for the replies to this post. I am a '78 grad but dont have much recollection of BK like I fo VG. Based on the price if admission I would have thought the poster dated to the 60s or 70s

I miss Justice as well. My son spent a week in 334 in Crimens' basketball camp. 334 was my room my freshmen year.

Spent more time in BKG and VG playing ball than anywhere else. Loved the games. From ‘73 -‘78, I lived in those places. Always looking for a game. Won some team handball championships, volleyball championships, and anything else that was playing. Loved the intramural competition and pickup games. Stopped the streak of the Justice Pack on the hardwood. Intramural basketball had over 100 teams in 4 divisions counting the frat boys who came smoked up. Those were the days.

Coach Light had us play with a visiting recruit to evaluate him - he destroyed us and signed with APP. Enjoyed the intramural games in BK. Also enjoyed the dances in BK and concerts in Varsity.

I too spent many days in BKG after classes, playing pick up games. Fall 1973 I also missed too many morning classes watching the Carolina Cougars in camp: Mike Lewis, Bob Verga, Mack Calvin, Joe Caldwell, Billy Cunningham, Ted "Hound Dog" McClain, "Easy" Ed Manning, Doug Moe, Steve Previs, Jim Chones, Steve Jones, Gene Littles, Tom Owens, Dennis Wuycik. I remember the Justice Pack in intramural basketball. BKG was also the venue for many concerts by The Embers, The Spongetones, The Catalinas.

The Catalinas supposedly wrote Summertimes Calling Me on the way to perform at BKG in the winter of 75 or 76 while stuck in the snow. Or so the story goes…..

Bob Verga when he played at Duke would have had a field day with the 3 pt shot if it had been in effect back then.

Taking everyone back to 1966, the largest crowd to ever attend a basketball game in BK was with Western Carolina. Many people we turned away and the reason for the crowd was to see one of the best BB players WCU ever had and his name was Henry Logan. They almost had to raise the ceiling due to his jumping ability.
