Changed the title name - didn't think the previous one was on-point
I know some of you will think this is lame, so you can fast forward :D
For those as bored as me, - here goes ---

Interesting. Without the black and gold glasses how many guys on the first list could have cracked the lineup on the second list?

The FCS guys were good, really good especially against the competition they played against. However, those names on the FBS side are better athletes and players and I doubt many of the FCS guys could have found much playing time on those FBS teams.

I think many of the FCS players would have started or received playing time at the FBS level.
Always felt like we were an FBS level team with a lot of FBS level talent playing in an FCS conference.

Good discussions - I must point out that several of those FCS guys who might not have started on the FBS teams played for a number of years in the NFL -

I agree. The starters during our FCS championship years were solid and many of them would have made the rotation in our current world. The main differences then were depth (lack of) and in some cases size.

Keep in mind the amount of regional/local G5 opportunities weren't the same then compared to what they are now.

JMU, Liberty, ODU, App, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, Coastal, (Schools who openly recruit some of the ones we land today) were all either FCS or didn't have a program during the middle 2000s era. Players weren't able to market their talents on a national level the way they are now so the opportunities to get noticed far from your state borders just wasn't there at the time.

Some of the lineman from the FCS era would have to gain some weight, but mentally and skill wise they could play at this level. Skill positions, no doubt in my mind they could have made it in today's era.

I seem to recall that we played something like 28 players against Michigan, including specialists.

Great discussion points. I’m sure of bunch of us vividly remember watching a few of those teams- I’m specifically thinking of the 2005-2008ish teams and even with a sense of reality felt like some of those dudes could easily compete for playing time at many FBS level schools. I’m not talking at the 15 or so big boy schools but certainly at a solid G5 (like a current App) level. We were limited by what, 20 less scholarship roster spots? We all cringed on kickoffs that landed at the 10 yard line and watched many a return go to the 40. Didn’t we routinely use starters on the kickoff teams? Seem to recall Brian Quick being used. Depth was the obvious difference and those main 25-30 guys had to include some that would still play today. Seems like Jerry preferred the 6’3” 260 lb lineman that could basically run up and down the field in our quicker paced offense. We didn’t build offensive lines for the slower paced run heavy style we use now. Like what was mentioned we still put some dudes in the pros despite the size disparities. AE comes up all the time as does the debate of whether he could have played QB now. Let’s say he added 20 lbs to his frame would he still be the same running threat. I know even in his day he took some serious licks and had his share of injuries- lawnmower not withstanding.

I think Larry Hand and Wayne Byrd should be added somewhere.

So did you pick the 5 best OL or try and go by position? Hard to leave Collins off the list, IMO.

I looked over every post in this thread so far and, correct me if I'm wrong but I've not seen Dexter Coakley's name, which is weird.

Dexter played a few years earlier. This is strictly a comparison between two small eras.
