WNC Player of the Year to sign with App State

SKYLAND — Roberson senior Austin Stamey was thrown right into the fire as a freshman.

He could withstand the heat of varsity soccer then. And Stamey sure can now.

The 2012 Citizen-Times All-WNC Player of the Year recently committed to Appalachian State.

Stamey expects to split time between forward and attacking midfielder this fall. The Mountaineers recruit is coming off a junior season in which he amassed 22 goals and six assists in 21 games for the Mountain Athletic Conference 4-A champion Rams (24-3-0).

As a result, Stamey was showered with postseason awards.

Not only was he the All-WNC player of the year and the MAC offensive player of the year, but Stamey was one of just 12 North Carolina boys players selected to the National Soccer Coaches Association’s All-Region III team.

“I really feel comfortable at Appalachian State,” Stamey said. “I know a lot of the players through club soccer, and I have a lot of friends up there. And the coaching staff is going to give me an opportunity to compete for playing time early.”

Stamey is a main cog for one of the most experienced teams in Rams history, and one coming off back-to-back appearances in the 4-A Western Regional championship game. Longtime coach Rob Wilcher said he expects to carry 14 seniors and nine juniors on his roster.
