Men's Soccer

Any news on Men's Soccer? I know that Appalachian FC has been a big hit so far, and I am curious if this has helped get the men's soccer team back at App. Seems like the longer we go without a team the harder it will be to get it back. Seems we have the funds (or think we do ) to make a ton of renovations and upgrades on the football stadium but can't get the men's soccer team going again. It might be a dead horse to some, but Ill keep beating it.

Unless we get a large donor to start it back up, doubt we get it back any time soon.

Facility enhancements across all sports can be (and are) funded by debt/loans/bonds. The operation budget of a sport cannot.

Spring Tour is end of April beginning of May. This would be a good question to be asked at every stop. I'll drive up to Raleigh and ask there.

I don't think it was purely a budget cut.

I think COVID-19 was a convenient reason to cut three sports, move the target of funding all athletics scholarships through Yosef Club/MAF, plus Title IX.

Given the growing popularity of soccer and our history, I have to believe you are right. It looked like a bad move at the time and it still does.

Which is the definition of a budget cut...

It was my understanding Title IX had a lot to do with it.

Maybe we should have eliminated baseball.

They just misread the cancellation. They meant to get rid of football but did fútbol by accident. It was too late to change the paperwork so they just rolled with it.

I would prefer App to sponsor both sports (as well as lacrosse), but considering the baseball season's calender and the Boone weather during that time, eliminating baseball instead of soccer would not have been as crazy an idea as it sounds. There is a reason the Big Ten is not a power conference in baseball, and it isn't money.

Of course, my comment was in jest in light of our fifth straight beat down.

I'm not sure how pointing out your thoughts as the reasons for cutting soccer are in fact budget cuts makes me an a-hole, but ok.

Where would our mens' soccer team play? Is the project at the old Watauga site finished (for soccer and track) ????? Doesn't seem like it would work having to share the present womens' soccer field.

They shared a field before. Why couldn't they now?

You are asking the wrong person, because I don't claim to know. There are several on this YC Forum who seem to have connections with DG the AD.

Ask DG the AD why not. I've never met him but several on this board have.

I have several times. If we still had a mens team, they would be sharing the field with the womens team. I am not sure I understand what you are asking...
