2022 Field Hockey mid-season more or less

Field Hockey is middle of the pack in the MAC. That is not bad considering all that is stacked against App State having a successful field hockey team.

Their losses have been close as well and they have had some solid wins. There was a time that was not the case.

All 5 losses were by one goal, with 3 of the 5 losses in OT. That's a hard fought season.

That OT loss to Duke was impressive. I got to watch it online, but have also watched Duke whip the Richmond Spider 8-1 in person. The Blue Devils are a dang good hockey team.

Also, all NCAA field hockey games are free. Take your daughters. It's a beautiful game.

Hope those close losses strengthen the team! Thanks for the update. Sometimes I forget that there are hundreds of other( non-football) student-athletes out there that practice just as hard , strive for improvement and represent APP as much as they can. GO APP FIELD HOCKEY!!!

My wife played FH in HS, at VCU, and club after college. We do watch games on ESPN+ and her leading comment is how different the game is today, if for no other reason the surface that they play on. Back in her day (60's and 70's) the game was mostly played on grass.

I'm glad to see our FH program have some success as it is our oldest female sport at App. We did suffer some lean years before our current coaching staff.

My wife also went to VCU, but she only played hockey in HS. She says the same thing about how the turf has changed the game.

It is now to the point where my daughters complain when their club or school teams play on grass. Most high schools here in Richmond have football style turf fields, and one rival of my oldest's school even has a water-based, college style turf. Just last week, after a road game against a Hampton Roads powerhouse, even though her team won 1-0, she still complained how unfair it was that the other school had turf in the football stadium but made them play on a lumpy grass field instead.

More on topic, solid conference win for App today.

Nice little MAC win streak. Longwood's not that good this year but they did beat MAC power Miami last weekend. 4-0 in FH is a pretty decisive win.

Courtland HS is Fredericksburg in the early 90s.

My wife graduated from George Wythe in 70. Obviously, a very different school today.

Best in the MAC and I can't remember the last time that happened.

We currently sit in 4th place a game out of first (there is a 3 way tie at the top at 4-1).

There was a time it would take 3 years to accumulate 6 wins.

Most goals in a game since 1979 against Clemson. 11 goals then so this is 2nd most ever.

Unless I missed something in the record book, with two games left (and the MAC tournament), this team needs one win to tie for most wins in a season in school history. Both games are against teams (Ohio and Davidson) ranked lower than App in the RPI. I like their chances.

Update - I did miss the 14-4-4 season in 1978, so one win to tie for second most wins - 12 wins were reached a few times.

They need to spotlight some of the FH games at homecoming. I know football is homecoming but take a few minutes before the game. Not to be putting the W in the column before the game starts against RMU but if this game is even close with our 2nd stringers I will be upset. Spotlight another sport that is having a banner year and largely flies under the radar. 5 minutes would be nice, maybe just before they announce the starting lineup.
