Do any of the new SBC teams sponsor Wrestling teams. Wrestling is pretty big in Virginia.

Nope, UALR wrestles in the Pac-12 and that is it for SB wrestling besides App.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Sat Feb 19, 2022 10:02 amDo any of the new SBC teams sponsor Wrestling teams. Wrestling is pretty big in Virginia.

ODU did but they shut the program down in the spring of 2020 just like we did with men's soccer.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Sat Feb 19, 2022 10:02 amDo any of the new SBC teams sponsor Wrestling teams. Wrestling is pretty big in Virginia.

It's moot anyway; Little Rock's hightailing it to the OVC on 1.July.2022. They simply don't speak football lingo and the SBC really isn't sorry to see them go. UTA's also looking for another conference home.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Sat Feb 19, 2022 11:14 amNope, UALR wrestles in the Pac-12 and that is it for SB wrestling besides App.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Sat Feb 19, 2022 10:02 amDo any of the new SBC teams sponsor Wrestling teams. Re: Grapplers Win SoCon Regular Season
Very true but I imagine if Marshall and ODU and JMU had wrestling the Sun Belt would likely keep UALR around for wrestling only and nothing else even as we said goodbye to them in other sports. They in turn would likely tell the SB off but I am sure the SB would make a play for them if it allowed the SB to sponsor wrestling In the case of UALR we could promise lower cost of travel than the PAC-12..asu66 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 19, 2022 4:11 pmIt's moot anyway; Little Rock's hightailing it to the OVC on 1.July.2022. The CUSA-3 have a few sports that the SB does not sponsor and the CUSA does sponsor. I wonder if those schools will stay CUSA or bolt to a non-SB and non-CUSA conference. There is more bad blood between CUSA and the leaving schools than I have ever seen before. I wonder if CUSA would drop sports entirely from their sponsorship just to spite the 3 schools leaving that would benefit from one sport staying in CUSA. It seems CUSA might spite the CUSA-3 even if working with them for one or two sports would be beneficial to the remaining CUSA members.
I think the SB is one school short of sponsoring men's soccer when the CUSA-3 joins. A shame we can't help there.

Re: Grapplers Win SoCon Regular Season
I don't think ticket sales are the primary source of income for wrestling. They make a good bit off of the camps they sponsor....or at least that is my understanding.

Re: Grapplers Win SoCon Regular Season
I assume they make a few thousand for each match they host on ticket sales. I assume they clear some money on conference tournaments as well but that is not every year they host. I bet camps make more money and the subscriptions to the FloSports stream is bringing in a few hundred dollars a year. But I am just guessing on that.

Interesting, a SoCon championship in something in 2022! Here I thought we left the SoCon years ago. Just kidding.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Mon Feb 21, 2022 3:25 pmI assume they make a few thousand for each match they host on ticket sales. Re: Grapplers Win SoCon Regular Season
I doubt we ever leave the SoCon completely, and they have some up and coming sports, now that could find us there with others sports if we grow our team number, though that is a long shot obviously.NewApp wrote: ↑Sun Feb 27, 2022 4:11 pmInteresting, a SoCon championship in something in 2022! Re: Grapplers Win SoCon Regular Season
Many probably already know this, but Avery County High won the 1a NC state wrestling championship. I don't know but I would imagine some of the App Wrestling camps are helping that group. Third Straight 1A state championship.

Re: Grapplers Win SoCon Regular Season
And hopefully that is in the Sun Belt. My fear is that football sucks the money away from bringing MSOC back, not that football is not the sport making the money so hard to argue that as well.

Hope we can get to a financial place to bring back men’s soccer.

Depends on what you call a few thousand.McLeansvilleAppFan wrote: ↑Mon Feb 21, 2022 3:25 pmI assume they make a few thousand for each match they host on ticket sales.
