This has to be one of the craziest stories out of Atlanta in years or one of the worst from the perspective of politicians and baseball... How do you move out of a stadium less than 17 years old? Turner Field ain't that bad (getting to a game and back out - that's a much different question). Talk about a SERIOUS lack of understanding somewhere in Fulton County.

Smart move by the Braves. Instead of getting involved in a lengthy fight with the local politicians, secretly negotiated a deal with Cobb County and moving the stadium to an area closer to their fan base. The area around Turner Field has become very dicey over the years with armed robberies, car break ins and even a murder of a fan for his cell phone this past season. Reportedly Cobb County is coming up with $400M of the $672M price tag, almost twice what Atlanta agreed to give the Falcons for their new stadium.

I think it is an excellent move. When Turner Field was constructed for the olympics, the city of ATL, promised the Braves organization they would allow businesses to come in and develop the area around the stadium. The promise is this would create a pre/post-game scene akin to what you see at other downtown ballparks with restaurants, bars, even condos. Instead the city has reneged and the stadium, 17 years later, sits on an island by itself that can really only be accessed by 1 main road.

Now if Denver, Colorado based Liberty Media would just sell the team to an individual with ties to Atlanta we would be truly in business.

There are more things to do around Fluor Field in Greenville, SC than Turner Field. When the action outside the stadium is outdone by a single A park you know you have problems.

I think it's a great move and the new stadium is only about 2.5 miles from my residence and 2 miles from my office. It is already a nice area and I expect some quality development to grow up around the complex. They will not have to "serve" the same collection of special interest groups here as at the current location and hopefully one will be able to attend a game without the concern of carrying a Glock. I expect it will increase property values in the area too.

How they handle the traffic congestion remains to be seen.

Are you bothered that you didn't get a vote on the $400M price tag Cobb County is forking over? Maybe not, but Deadspin's article about it yesterday seemed to indicate that some were upset about it.

With that said, I agree that it's a good move for the Braves as an organization. They get to spend the same amount as if they renovated Turner Field, but get a brand new ballpark. It will probably ultimately be a good financial investment for Cobb County too.

I'm actually about 100 feet inside 285 and in Fulton County so the Cobb tax issue doesn't affect me. I would have an issue with it if I were in Cobb but would likely support it.

Turner Field is a great place for a baseball experience, but it's never been easy to get to or away from. It's pretty tough for developers to go into the hood for what amounts to a seasonal business, 81 days a year, so the Six Flags atmosphere that fans are apparently looking for will be a bit easier to establish in the burbs. I guess the new field will be called the Larry.
