I wonder what happens to the Spinal Tap concert that is to be released this spring. I think this is to be a concert at Stonehenge. I assume a small statement at the start or end of the film.

Haven't read much on it, but discussion on the radio this morning was that their 32 year old son killed them.

I don't think Rob Reiner gets included among the great filmmakers of his generation as much as he probably should, compared to people like Speilberg or Scorsese, because he has made "lighter" or "fluffier" films, including, God forbid, comedies. But how else should one look at a catalogue including greats like "The Princess Bride", "This Is Spinal Tap", "A Few Good Men", and "Stand By Me", classics all. And while "When Harry Met Sally" isn't my cup of tea, it is arguably the most well-made rom-com ever.

When I was at App (88-93), it was kind of a big deal that the water wheel outside of Geno's was used in The Princess Bride movie. It was one of the first times I realized the extraordinary lengths that film makers go to get one aspect of a scene. Like, couldn't they just build out a water wheel on a set cheaper then sending everyone to the high country for a single scene.

My brother has worked in Hollywood doing a lot of second unit and "below the line" production jobs. And even after 20 years in the business, he still surprises me with his stories of what seem to me to be a waste of money to get just the right shot. Last year while working on some dumb 5 episode streaming show on a service I had never heard of and the name of which I can't remember, he and two other second unit guys flew from LA to London and spent less than 12 hours on the ground to get a single scenery establishing shot of a random English country estate, and the shot ended up getting cut from the final edit anyway.

His range was remarkable. Comedy, fantasy, drama, real-life documentary such as the Spinal Tap movies.

I read where 30 million people tuned into the General Hospital episode when Luke and Laura got married. 30 million in 1981 is insane for a daytime television show. My older sister loved that soap and I confess that we were amongst those numbers to watch.

I may have told this story here before...my freshman year we did not have tv in each room. Each floor had their own tv in the common area. But in the tv room in the student union, there were 3 big screens, with carpeted partitions shielding some noise from the others. I had a buddy that was really into General Hospital and we'd meet at the union after class to watch. You know (or don't) how soaps build up the inevitable big cliffhanger for the Friday episode and the place was PACKED with girls for the meeting between Laura, who had gone missing, or maybe it was Luke, but anyway at the very end, they finally saw each other and the show ended. There was a huge scream from all the girls, more like a squeal.

There was another segment who watched All My children or whatever other soap was on at the same time, and it was very popular as well. They were all watching over the partitions to see what was going on.

It was a big deal.
