High Country Hurricane Damage

Unread post by Bootsy » Sat Sep 28, 2024 5:13 pm

Friends, I realize the HC holds a very special place in the hearts of everyone here. So I’m creating a dedicated thread to share updates.

The High Country doesn’t have much in the way of media outlets. Plus, the big state/national news outlets didn’t have time to place reporters there due to uncertainty of storm track.

Because of road washouts, mudslides, down trees/powerlines, etc., updates are very slow in coming. So word-of-mouth is how many updates are being communicated out to the larger world right now.

“Unprecedented” and “Catastrophic” are overused words these days. But they accurately describe the destruction in the HC. Comparisons being made to the flood of 1940 are not media hype; many believe the damage from this event is even is much worse.

Feel free to post any updates you receive here. Also, please consider donating to the Red Cross or other ministries/charities involved in relief efforts. There are victims across many states who are suffering from this storm.

No words to describe this. I’ve been around awhile as have my people, here for generations. It is catastrophic.

This is one of many that will be sad to report.
Last seen floating down the river with her house. I had to let this sink in a few minutes.
So sad.

This is Cleetus McFarland, owner of the Freedom Factory and You Tube fame. From Florida, so cool to see so many using their own resources to help!

Yeah I watched him on YT for years.

Here is a lot of the private heli guys. I know Greg Biffle has been helping with a heli and went and picked up some from Banner Elk recently on his social media.

Saw a vid of village area of Biltmore it is pretty wiped out too.

The lasting damage will be compounded by the lack of tourism in the near future as well. A lot of small businesses may have to close because of that, even if they survived without damage from the storm.

So….did the Boone Waffle House remain open through all this?

I'm guessing they closed due to the water in that area and then loss of power, but assume water didn't get up to the building.

They closed around 11am on Thursday, not sure if/when it re-opened. The manager stated they needed to send their people home to deal with the impending damage.
