Everyone, sharing an update here from Town of Banner Elk-

"Temperatures are starting to fall in the HC and there is a real need for cold-weather supplies like:
  • Heaters
  • New Sleeping bags
  • New Blankets
  • New Jackets (adult & child)
Important: No matter the size of the donation, please contact the agency you want to help before making a delivery. At this time, many relief agencies are overwhelmed and need to pause donations. This is because so many non-cold weather supplies have been received, they need to be diverted to larger warehouses where they will be stored for future distribution in Avery County."

I realize this might sound like a contradiction, but there are still needs. And thanks again to everyone who has given so selflessly during this trying time!
75 hoodies
24 pair of joggers/sweats
70 thermals
24 blankets
21 jackets
80 thermal socks
and a bunch of non-perishable foods.

The plane was splashy at landing and maybe a tad overweight! But we made it hahaha.

Sending love and prayers from our company along the coast in Charleston, SC to all the people in WNC. #Mountainstrong

Is it possible to drive up there or would we just be getting in the way? Just thinking the fastest way to get some of this to these folks might be to just bring it right to town. Also just a little food for thought. My wife works with someone who has family that was directly affected. Another tuff story. House ruined, nothing but a few clothes saved and on top of everything the wife and mother is currently receiving treatment for leukemia. We decided to adopt them and most of our efforts will go directly to them. Just suggesting that if you can find one person or one family to help it could be the most effective way to help.

My son volunteered with Samaritan’s Purse this week for three days and my wife is volunteering for 1 or 2 days next week. They need people help. And they have team jobs for almost anyone.

My son is going back in a couple weeks as his work schedule permits.

Go on line or call them to volunteer.

I have been warning my elected officials for years that the lack of trust in the federal government would have consequences. And make no mistake the federal government has earned the lack of trust. Not saying that FEMA has done anything wrong, I don’t know. But there are new rumors that FEMA is taking supplies from Western NC and diverting them to illegals. Let me be very clear, I am not saying this is happening, I doubt it is happening. But if we didn’t let 10s of millions of illegals in people wouldn’t be scared that the support they need would be diverted to help illegals. Action have consequences. And in this case the consequences will hurt people in Western NC.

A national news show reporting such nonsense only amplifies the problem. Maybe do their job and vet it, or STFU.

I think people have misinterpreted what FEMA covers, what the SBA covers, and what your housing insurance covers. A lot of people are hurting, and unfortunately, looking to take their frustrations out on someone.

Not at all what I’m doing. I’m pointing out that many of the people in Western NC don’t trust the Federal Government. While I believe in a health skepticism of government we are in a very unhealthy place right now. I wish that wasn’t true but it is true. Just look at what is happening. I have honestly almost begged my elected officials to address the issue of a lack of trust in government. By relaying the rumor I’m making the point that things have gotten really crazy and trying to make the point that it has gotten very dangerous. And I did not hear this off social media. With the exception of this board I don’t use any social media. It was told to me by a co-worker who went up to drop off some supplies. And for what’s it’s worth I told him I found it highly unlikely that there was any truth to the rumor. Point is there is so little trust in the Feds that this can and has taken hold.

Here's a really good presentation from a geologist on what happened in Chimney Rock. Great tuition-free lecture.
