Just feel like he got a call from someone that says, “hey preserve your eligibility, redshirt and transfer to Auburn next year. We’ve got $3M waiting on you”. Wouldn’t put it past Hugh Freeze or some others. (This is an example)

After the Kansas win he hired an NIL agent. Days later he walked into the coaches office and demanded 300k to stay. Coach said no. Next day he was a no show at practice and cleaned out his locker. His agent is trying to leverage more money for him from UNLV and I'm sure has another suiter on the other line.

I think we will see more of this from the guys who aren't going to play on Sundays and are trying to get one good payday out of their college eligibility. It's not pretty, but I kind of understand it when you've only got one shot to get the money bag before you move on with life. It's a business. People in many walks of life hols out for more money. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. But that's a part of our business world. It's just more glaringly ugly when applied to sports with diehard fans.

This is good for us. UNLV is out. Increases our playoff chances…..

Maybe not, seems this is short term thinking on the QBs perspective if has NFL aspirations. Maybe I am old school, if I were a GM, it would give me some pause. I get NFL players hold out all the time...but not typically mid season

He's nowhere good enough for the NFL. Seems like he's trying to capitalize his value with only 1 year remaining left of football. Don't blame him, he's following the system set in place, even though the system sucks. This won't be the last time we see this happen. Happened with a high profile USCjr DL last year, asked to be redshirtted, transferred to Georgia and is now riding pine.

He wants to cash out , while he can.Not going to judge him.

This is just the beginning, it's going to become far uglier down the road. I'm still in, but probably not for long.

Red shirts should be limited to a freshman year and then one for a medical issue. A guy 3 games into his junior or senior season should absolutely not have this option.

D'Eriq King bailed on Houston when they started out not meeting expectations after 4 games his Senior year and took a redshirt. He went to Miami, signed a big NIL deal with the NHL's Florida Panthers, and was injured.

Then, he signed with the Patriots as an undrafted free agent, had a stint on the Panthers practice squad and spent a week on an an XFL roster. Now, he's QB coach for SMU.

If someone has talent (or potential talent) someone will overlook the past.

At the same time, so far, these two are outliers. NIL is not a good thing in it's current form, but it doesn't mean that everyone is going to follow this path.

If the folks who run college football have any sense this kid will go straight on an unofficial black list and end up playing for a community college. And I for one hope it happens. This is completely out of control.

This is why we need to give up the amateurism dream and just go to employee contracts, not some NIL agreement.

He would have a contract for 1 year at a set value. Voluntarily taking a red shirt would violate that contract and the school would be able to claw back any monies paid (if written in the contract). Alternatively, if there was an additional suitor out there, they could simply buy out his contract and then he could transfer to the new suitor at the end of the year to play.

It just makes things much more clear to the player and the school, and it keeps scummy people like this agent from trying to take advantage.

I think people were trying to set them up as non profits but it was shot down so people couldn't claim it against taxes. Personally I think NIL collectives should be taxed as businesses

Not that your larger point isn't valid, but IIRC the Houston coach (Holgorsen IIRC) was the one who actually made the call for King to sit because they were losing. Or at the least, he was fully on board with it publicly. The idea being that King would be back at Houston the next year. Oops...

A story where there are no good guys to root for.

Collectives should be banned period. It’s not even close to spirit of the court ruling. True NIL deals wouldn’t be nearly as bad as what’s going on with these collectives. But no way should the donations be tax deductible.
