Walton’s basketball journey began at UCLA, where the 6-foot-11, red-headed center starred under legendary coach John Wooden and led the Bruins to national championships in 1972 and 1973, both in perfect 30-0 seasons. In the ’73 title game, Walton took 22 shots and missed only one, scoring a championship contest-record 44 points.

The team at one point won 88 straight games, a men’s record that still stands. In his three varsity seasons, Walton was national college player of the year and an All-American

He was scary good. The 73 game was a masterpiece. The 74 semifinal game was a matchup for the ages . I am acquainted with a couple of guys that played in that one.

He was a true renaissance man. Will miss him covering games on ESPN.

The irony of him passing on memorial day.

Loved his game and Twitter commentary. Wish they could have had him on the TNT show with Shaq and Barkley.

He went out on the same weekend his “Conference of Champions” played its final game.
