NCSU swimmer won the 1650 freestyle and was disqualified because he "interfered with another swimmer." His crime? This has nothing to do with the NCAA. That was the call of the ACC refs based on the ACC rules.

Refs made the correct call based on every rule organized swims meets have had for years/decades.

It looks to me to have something to do with swimmer safety as well. Also to not impede other swimmers to gain an advantage.

It looks to me to have something to do with swimmer safety as well. Also to not impede other swimmers to gain an advantage.

And at the high school level it speeds up the races some. Often they will have swimmers from the previous heat stay in the water and come out after the next heat is off the blocks. It is a bit of safety it seems, a bit speeding things up (at least for high school meets) and a bit of sportsmanship as well.
