More NCAA stupidity; can't make this up

NCSU swimmer won the 1650 freestyle and was disqualified because he "interfered with another swimmer." His crime? He straddled the lane rope, celebrated, and then fell into his teammate's lane AFTER THE RACE was finished. That organization and the clowns who run that circus are so FUBAR it's not even funny anymore.

Stupid decision, but that’s not on the NCAA.

This has nothing to do with the NCAA. That was the call of the ACC refs based on the ACC rules.

I told my swim coach wife and she immediately groaned, not in support of the swimmer, but knowing the rules are such that the race is not over until it is over for all in the heat and until you stay in your lane and do not celebrate. Refs made the correct call based on every rule organized swims meets have had for years/decades.

So it is akin to dropping the ball before you cross the plane of the end zone?

It looks to me to have something to do with swimmer safety as well. Also to not impede other swimmers to gain an advantage.

Pretty much.

And at the high school level it speeds up the races some. Often they will have swimmers from the previous heat stay in the water and come out after the next heat is off the blocks. It is a bit of safety it seems, a bit speeding things up (at least for high school meets) and a bit of sportsmanship as well.

The rhetoric and NCAA backlash is out of control and severely misguided. (And I’m not talking about swimming.) Who do people think controls the NCAA? It’s the member institutions.

It's just easier for people to point the finger anymore.

Well the quickest path to a conclusion is between the index finger and the lowest hanging fruit.
