What is the mission , the purpose of a college or university? How does this align with it ? It doesn’t.
Well you could make that same argument for high school sports as well. That's why many don't have sports associated with schools in Europe. You play for clubs instead.
At least at the scholastic level, I think sports does play an important part in the school's misson, much as other extra-curricular activities like performing arts, visual arts, debate, ROTC, quiz bowl, outdoor programs, etc. All of these contribute to building a "well-rounded student" - teamwork, hard work, comradary, pride in a job well done, etc.

The same can be said about college sports as well, outside of the big-money, semi-professional business model of P5 football and basketball.
Part of its funding too. Imagine if schools just focused on academics and clubs. Let other groups use their money to handle sports. I'd be OK with that.

Incredible that lawsuits are systematically dismantling a governing body’s authority piece by piece.

That’s what happens when a governing body is built on absolutely nothing.

In hindsight that argument makes sense, but many many organizations are built on rules they make themselves, many of which stand for generations. It’d be like a woman suing because she couldn’t pledge a fraternity and then all fraternities and sororities nationwide would be, by law, deemed unconstitutional and forced to become unisex.

I’m not defending the NCAA, they’re as uncaring, corrupt, and inconsistent as the day is long. All I’m saying is their long standing rules have been systematically dismantled by college kids in the last 10 years and it’s wild to see.

The transferring is going to be ridiculous but it should lead to a much more competitive environment for college sports. It will not be the same 6 teams every year. That could be a good thing. I think App is in a good position for this right now but NIL could get nuts and it could be what makes the top 6 hard to join. It just want be the same blue bloods....it will be a new bunch. I do think Liberty has a huge advantage in the g5. A Boone Pickens / Joe Moglia type character is going to be able to make an even bigger impact.

I think this could contribute to more parity as really good players won't want to ride the pine at the big boy schools. You could see a huge percentage of those rosters turning over every year.

I agree. The numbers don’t change. There are only so many spots on a roster for scholarship players. While this is seen as a good thing for these athletes, it is actually a detriment to them. Those that don’t want to put in the work will be left out in the cold.

Let's say that next year 75% of the portal entrants are college freshmen and sophomore players who barely played or some not at all. There is no game film to watch so they are basically being re-recruited based on what they did in high school.

But will Scholarships still be needed. Yes, for the guys not making much on NIL money. But if I’m Bama or Ohio State or Michigan and I don’t have a scholarship but I want a player I could just go get enough NIL money to make a scholarship unnecessary.

There are already cases of players taking a PWO offer from a P5 school with a high NIL deal because of exactly what you said.

This is only going to make it worse.

Next step will be mid-season trades (I mean transfers) like pros. Transfers right up to before conference championship games and bowls. The academic component has basically been slowly removed from the equation.

This model is destined to crash and burn at some point. It’s not sustainable.

If a player is willing to take a walk on with NIL to be 5th team, do you really want him on your team?

There are approximately 11,000 D1 players every season (130 teams x 85 scholarships)- ignoring the walk-on guys. Of that number how many are getting significant NIL money? I don't know what would count as significant, maybe $100k per? Is this public knowledge?

Every scholarship player on Utahs team got a Ford truck last year as part of a NIL deal. Call it $40,000. And that’s Utah, the money is going to be idiotic.

Each player received a leas3d truck if they wanted it. The players are responsible for the taxes on the vehicle.

And then they had to drive a Ford.

We all want money, but most of these players want to be in the league even more. They cant get there not playing. I do feel like there will be a couple dominant teams every year, but I also see where a good coach can stitch together a bunch of players they normally wouldn't get and upset some of the establishment. We've talked about talent on here for years and how we get so much more with less. This can still be the case and I think it will for those who figure out the formula. No amount of money can pay for team dynamics and a group coming together to work as a unit. Figure this out and the smaller teams have a chance. I really wish someone like Gill would get all the G5 and other smaller P5's together and make some noise in regards to the points about college football being more than just the Big Ten and SEC. Are the millions of fans of these other schools not important to TV ratings and interest?

Personally I think many are overreacting - I think it will all fall into place where most schools will develop a plan which works for them -

I find it ironic those that typically prefer greater regulations in their day-to-day lives don't see the need to regulate NIL and vice versa.

That’s not what he meant and you know it Andy. You just want to pick a fight where one doesn’t exist.
