Asking about travel / camper info

Unread post by WVAPPeer » Mon May 29, 2023 5:57 pm

This is kind of a strange ask - but - if anyone has any info on renting/using travel campers I would like to know - We are at a point where we just can't swing spending several nights in a motel/hotel - would like to get away for a few days but have never looked into renting a camper. I have a Honda CRV so I couldn't pull anything but some type of small camper. Hey, I'm just fishing here so any info would be appreciated --- thanks ---

We looked into renting RVs as well. It was pretty expensive something between $150 and $200 a day.

Even renting a small camper likely won't save you much money, if at all. The nightly rate plus campground fees are similar to a basic hotel. You'll also get about half the gas mileage (probably around 11mpg) so it costs more getting there too.

If you do get into it, look at state / federal campgrounds vs private since rates are around $30 instead of $60+.

Another affordable option is Hipcamp. It's like Air B&B but just for camping land. You typically get a much more private and unique experience at good rates.

What is the tow rating on your CRV?

Just looked it up and the CRV has max tow rating of only 1500lbs. That's a very small popup or tiny teardrop. You could probably buy a nice, older popup for pretty cheap and make it more cost effective. Teardrops seem to hold their value much better so there aren't many cheap ones around. Setup time, heating / cooling efficiency, and security are the tradeoffs with popups.

Get you a nice pop-up and look for one used with an air conditioner. You will have a blast. As someone mentioned...look for county, state and national parks. There are some nice ones around.

I was broke when I had small kids...we had a blast in our pop up. Carowinds, orlando, myrtle beach. You can go cheap if you look around. We usually went for a week at a time. Someone mentioned gas...the gas bill is higher. This is why we usually did weeks at a time. The CRV will struggle pulling a pop-up up the mountain and more importantly breaking on the way down the mountain. Come down the mountain in second gear. Good luck.

The towing capacity would be the biggest concern. We just had a pop up but it was a high wall and was about 3,500lb.

I have a pop up but the lift kit went out on it 2 days before I had a big tripped planned so I used one of those online camper rental groups that's basically an airbnb for all types of campers. It was actually really good. The camper was great and while as much as a hotel room at night, the cost is microscopic compared to actually owning one of these. You pick it up and drop it off, that's your cost, no storage, maintenance, weather proofing, etc. If you are looking to start camping a lot, look to buy for the ultimate in flexibility . . . if just a trip or two, rent one. Some renters even will do the travel and set-up, tare down for you . . . it costs extra, but hey, your in the woods not a hotel room.

Not sure if this is an option or not. Have you thought about a tent. They make some really good ones and large at same time. Maybe that is more primitive than you want to go. My wife and I did that several years ago when we would periodically go camping with her family. They went all the time. We only went once or twice a year. It did not make sense to buy a camper.

Try: outdoorsy.com or rvshare.com, so many choices/prices.

Also, all you out there with RV's/self contained campers/even vans, try Harvest Hosts as a free place to stay. Great spots, 1000's of locations. The catch is they don't usually have hook-ups and stuff, but if you are looking for a safe/beautiful place to boondock, this is a must to consider. Visited one a few weeks ago outside of Manassas at an incredible farm/brewery, it was great.

I'm guessing that mid June would not be a good time to look for a 2-3 day small cabin renter in the Boone area?

For past couple of years, we have stayed in blowing Rock. Stayed at Victoria Inn, Blowing Rock Inn.
I remember the blowing Rock Inn being less than $150 per night. It was basic room with what you need. Had a chair outside the door to sit. It works for us as we were in the room just to sleep. You can walk to main street to all restaurants from many of the hotels in blowing Rock. Just a thought I'd you do not mind being 15 minutes from Boone.
We are planning to try some of the other boutique hotels in blowing Rock this football season to see which one we like best.
