Hans: UNC System steps up mental health efforts
EDITOR’S NOTE: North Carolina faces a crisis in student mental health; there have been five student suicides at NC State University alone this academic year. System President Peter Hans delivered these remarks to the UNC Board of Governors on Feb. 23. He delivered them again Tuesday, disclosing his own struggles with depression, to almost 400 administrators, staff, mental health providers and students from across the UNC System, as well as the state’s private and community colleges.

CHAPEL HILL (March 22, 2023) – What a joy it is to be here with you today. This is a powerful gathering of so many experts with so many perspectives addressing all these related subjects with care and compassion and intelligence. I’m grateful to you.

I recently met with chancellors and student health officials from across the UNC System to talk about one of the most important challenges facing parents and educators everywhere: The soaring rates of anxiety, depression, and loneliness among young people.

For more than a decade now, we’ve witnessed a troubling trend among America’s youth. Since 2010, the percentage of American teenagers who experience major depression has more than doubled. The percentage of American undergraduates diagnosed with anxiety or depression has more than doubled. And rates of self-harm and suicide have all risen sharply.

No coincidence this rise has coincided with the rise of social media and cellphone addiction.

Nothing can change it now. It will only get worse because the root of the problem will never go away and if anything only get more mentally intrusive as tech advances. The education system is just caught in the growing wave and will catch flack because they are an easy visible target to blame for everything.
