Any recommendations? Appears that most courses are private.

Mountainaire is a great little course with beautiful views and always in good shape. My wife and I have a cabin close to West Jefferson so I have probably played that course 20 times. Since it is a holiday weekend I would recommend making a tee time well in advance.

Mountain Aire is one of my favorite courses in North Carolina. Played it at the beginning of July and it was in great shape.
Mountain Glen in Newland is also a fun course and usually in great shape.
Boone Golf Club is in incredible shape as well and despite the Boone Golf Club name, they allow public play.

Sugar is a mix of Par 3s and 4s with one Par 5.
Linville Land Harbor is Public. It has a traditional Front 9. The back 9 is par 3s and short target-golf Par 4s. It's in the woods and despite the short length, it is very challenging.

You really cannot go wrong with any of these 5.

Come play at Mountain Glen in Newland. I live here and it is a very nice course.

Is Roan Valley still open in Tennessee? I’ve played there several times and always enjoyed it. It’s a bit of a haul from Boone, but not too bad.

I think it is call Red Tail Mountain Club or something like that. We pass it on how our trips take us into Boone.

No longer open. Was always one of my favorite places to play.

You won't pass it coming from Maryland, but if anybody comes down 321 on their way home, would highly recommend the Jackson Course at Rock Barn. It's about an hour and 15 from Boone but if you're already coming down 321 it's only about 15 minutes off the highway.

As others have said, Mountain Aire if you want somewhere extra close.

Agreed. Lived in Hickory when I first started my career. Rock Barn has two nice golf courses.

Boone Golf Club was my favorite when I was in summer Masters classes - 4 hrs in class, 2 to 4 golfing, and back to 4 hrs with books.

Only Jackson is public now, they made Jones private shortly after they stopped playing the PGA Champions tour there.

You're laughing but I wouldn't be opposed to getting together and meeting some of you guys and playing. I live in Welcome but I'll drive to meet you guys.

I would be in for some golf. For me individually, It would have to be a day before/after game situation or planned visit around visiting our daughter as I currently live in DC area until we retire in Boone....then much more flexible...

Sugar Mountain is the most affordable course in the area. I work there and it is $55.00 for 18 holes. It is a shorter course. It has 9 par threes, 8 par fours and one par 5. Two years ago Golf Advisor ranked it number two in nation for courses under 6000 yards. Would love to see my fellow mountaineers enjoy this beautiful course. See sugar.com is the website if you are interested.
