I was driving High Rock Rd in McLeansville north and crossed into Rockingham County. Just as High Rock ends in southeast Rockingham county there is an open field on a bit of a high spot. I turned my head to look in the general western direction and off in a distance was a decent size mountain. I assume I was looking at Hanging Rock but at the time I was not thinking this.

I looked this up on Google Earth as soon as I arrived home and as the bird flies Hanging Rock would have been about 40 miles away from my location in the car. I was guessing 20-25 miles away so being 40 miles away would not be unreasonable.

Is there anything in Rockingham County that would have been between me in the southeast part of the county and Danbury that I was looking at instead of Hanging Rock? I am not aware of anything

Found an article from Jan 1999 in the GBO N&R. Having trouble linking it but I googled “highest elevation in Rockingham Co. and found it. I grew up in Walnut Cove and would believe that Hanging Rock or Sauratown Mt would be too far as you mentioned.

Cedder Mtn would have been 23 miles away from my vantage point. That would have made my guess amazingly accurate in the distance I mentioned.

I am marking this as mystery solved. There is a convenience store very nearby and the next time I am on this road I might stop in and ask them.
