Top 5 Christmas movies

Unread post by appstatealum » Wed Dec 25, 2019 12:44 pm

Instead of doing my regular derailing of a football thread....

What is everyone's top 5 Christmas movies?

5. Home Alone 2
4. A Christmas Story
3. Home Alone
2. National Lampoons Christmas Vacation
1. Die Hard

I've already watched 2 of these this morning... Although I had to watch Die Hard before the kiddos got up....

Olde ones:
It’s a Wonderful Life
White Christmas
Miracle on 34th Street

Newer I’d put Elf above HA2

Ooo, Elf is a good one, it might be 5b at this point.

I have to put the classics (pre 1980) in another category. All three of those are great.

Honorable Mention Just Because: It's a Wonderful Life and either Miracle on 34th Street
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

1. A Christmas Story
2. Elf
3. The Grinch (original)

Those are pretty much the only ones I watch. Frosty is a classic but honestly so dark that I find it haunting.

ETA: A Christmas Carol is great too but I haven’t watched it in so long I’m not sure where to rank it.

Reds
Reds is one of my favorite Warren movies But I have to admit I never thought of it as a Christmas movie. Maybe I need to watch this movie again.
This is my very generic signature added to each post.

I made it home from the CCG just in time to put on my John McClain getup for a Christmas Costume party... Complete with wife beater, bloody feet and pistol taped to my back! Not to toot my own horn, but “toot, toot!” (Or should I say “Yippeekiyay!”)... They loved me!!! Yeah, Die Hard is my #1! Merry Christmas Mountaineers!

1. Christmas Vacation
2. Miracle on 34th Street
3. Scrooged
4. Die Hard
5. Gremlins

6. I'm going to give Klaus an honorable mention, that movie was pretty good from both an originality standpoint and incredible hand-drawn/2D animation. You should def. check it out if you have a Netflix account.

Top "Die Hard is NOT a Christmas movie" list (traditional Christmas themes)

A Christmas Story
Its A Wonderful Life
Christmas Vacation
Elf
Scrooged

Top "Die Hard IS a Christmas movie" list (only very slightly thematically Christmas but set during the Holidays)

The Thin Man
Die Hard
Iron Man 3
Lethal Weapon
Rocky IV

Top "I'm not sure if Die Hard is a Christmas movie or not, but Thanksgiving movies count" list (off-beat or non-traditionally focused but still generally Christmas/Holiday themed)

Gremlins
Home Alone
Nighmare Before Christmas
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Krampus

Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a Thanksgiving movie.

It's a common misconception...same with 'Dutch'...another Thanksgiving gem.

The opening scenes show his house decorated for Christmas, and those decorations destroyed in the attack.
