I doubt it catches on as the country is dead set on cutting spending with the deficit and this would certainly increase spending immensly. Could be an attempt at the GOP to reach out to the youth vote which is a weak demographic for them. Tea Party will fight this tooth and nail. If they dont they are the biggest bunch of hypocrits ever.

Notice that relatively imbedded in the article is referenced the online degree programs. Personally, I am not a fan of online degree programs being given the credence of on campus seated programs.....but they are more and moreso. I hope that ASU stays out of the online degree more than what they already are.

I can't speak for App State since it has been 8 years since I was on the faculty, but at the last two universities where I have taught (Texas State and now Angelo State) online degrees and programs are almost the only thing the administrators want to talk about. Here at my ASU, we will have our MBA fully online by the beginning of Fall. (Luckily I do not teach in that program.) Most students that I have do not like online classes and it is getting harder and harder to find some classes that are face to face. We as professors are being incentivized (if there is such a word) to develop more online courses. Currently there is a $5,000 stipend for each online course that we develop.

I know that I am old fashioned in many ways, but I cannot think that the value of an online degree is worth that of a face to face program. Even if the content contained in each is the same, the lack of interaction in a personal way and the lack of out of class interactions make the face to face product so much better.

My wife has a Masters in Library Science from UNT that was completed with only 3 days on campus for an orientation program. While she loved it (she was much more "mature" than many students) and seemed to learn a lot, she made no connections with the faculty, students or university. All of that was fine with her, but for an undergrad it creates no ties to the university.

I could see where Appalachian State however, might be very interested in online programs since Boone is somewhat isolated. But I would hate to teach or attend in a total online environment.
