No way I could get into App out of high school right now.

I teach high school, and it's gotten insanely competitive insanely quickly. LOTS of seniors get disappointed every year because they think they can just breeze by on Bs and Cs, then college application time comes around and the only get accepted to community college.
One of my school's brightest seniors got wait-listed at UNC because it's so hard to get in as an out-of-state student.

Out of state applicants have a much tougher time gaining acceptance due to the limits set by the state on how many non residents you can admit. App’s limit is somewhere around 700.

Yeah my daughter was shocked to get into UT as their acceptance for OOS is very low.
App accepted her in 3 days, all the others were long waits (even ECU took forever).

I got accepted by App in Oct and did nothing the rest of the senior year since I knew I'd go to App no matter what UNC said, got rejected by UNC in April.

For those who may need it and not know it seems South Carolina public univs offer a $500 academic scholarship that if you get it as an OOS student you get in-state tuition. That is what my daughter was going to apply for but Clemson in-state is still more than UNC in-state.

My wife did as well, but she had App has her first choice for the teaching fellows scholarship. Her parents encouraged her to go to App on the full ride despite getting some money from UNC and other schools, and despite her dad and brother being UNC grads. She ended up loving Boone and the school, although she got out of fulltime teaching a few years after fulfilling the teaching fellows obligations when we started a family.

I paid out-of-state for my son and it was basically the same cost as in-state for Virginia Tech, and less than in-state for UVa.

Yeah. In-state tuition for Virginia schools is ridiculous. Especially at UVA and Tech. There is no UVA system, so every public school basically operates independently.

My wife's step brother was at UNC during that year so it was fun for me as well. Her step sister graduates from UNC this May as well.

First off, congrats to your daughter!

While my oldest, a senior, has decided to go out of state I have two others that have their eyes firmly locked on UM (and they will have no issues with regards to grades getting in there, they got their mom's brain) there ain't much of an in-state discount there.

- over 6k are first generation students, a shocking number really

We communicated to our two daughters that you can attend any public university in state of North Carolina. If they elected private or out of state, the difference is on them... scholarships or loans...we thought that was reasonable

This reminds me of the FL people I knew at App that only had been up during summer prior to starting school. Had not prepped for winter at all.

Little shocked there is that many families that have 1st gen students.

And crap I'm getting close to that 50 mark but those are undergrad #s for over 50 I assume, I haven't seen to many in my grad classes that are over 50. I seem to be the oldest in most of my classes so far.
