Since App doesn't get to play stAte this year, I'll be pulling for GS as I want every opponent the Mountaineers face to have the best possible record coming into the game against our team. A Red Wolves' win does nothing to help the Mountaineers this season.

Those who relish in Statesboro's misery may get to continue enjoying Eagle sorrow if GS beats stAte. A win could lead TK to retaining Summers for another year and I think we all agree he was a bad hire for the Eagles.

Sure I hope GS wins to help us, but don't see it happening.

Although I see some appeal in having our only rival be good, I've never understood the logic behind why we "need" GS to be good.

They sucked in the late 2000s and we did fine. They suck now and we're doing fine.

So you are OK with GS becoming Western Carolina? Competition is important, not just on the field, but on recruiting trails. etc?

I don’t think GaSo will become WCU. One bad coaching hire can really screw you up, but they’ll be back once they clear out the bums.

We were OK when Western sucked too, IIRC.

We are recruiting at the highest level we ever have right now, with particular success in Georgia. Perhaps not a coincidence that this is happening while GS is a train wreck.

But I agree with Gonzo that they won't turn into Western. They'll be back soon enough.

Never said they would become Western. I asked if you would be ok if that happened? To lose our only true rival.

I think we'd lose something not having a competitive rivalry. I just don't think it would prevent us from being successful. Again, see past and present results.

I also don't think they'll be our only rival forever.

I don't think App automatically declines because GS stinks for a few years, but we do lose something. That game is a fan favorite and is one of our best attended games, even on Thursday night. Having a natural rival builds fan interest overall and until we develop more natural rivals in the Belt, GS is it. When WCU declined, we still had Marshall in the SoCon and then GS came into the conference. Over the years, we developed OOC rivalries (even if the meetings were less frequent) with programs like James Madison and Montana (messages boards helped with that).

GS will be back, and I'm not shedding tears for them. I just believe it's more fun to have a rival who is competitive. I also think the Belt is having a tough year and it would have been good if GS had exceeded expectations but that's not happening.

I'm secretly upset to see GS struggling this bad...bothers me to see them win but really bothers me seeing them lose this badly.

A little more than half way through the first quarter, painful to watch. 0 - 0

Watching the game (because I'm a sucker for weeknight college ball and I'm a glutton for punishment). Nothing very impressive on either side of the ball so far (about 3 min left in the 1st).

Side note: stAte's unis are terrible. Their numbers look like they're made of red duct tape.

I was at our game at GaSo last year. They had us down 10-0 after the first quarter and we were tied 10-10 at half. I guess they stayed in the locker room after halftime, because we ended up drilling them, 34-10.

They look bad. Really bad, but it's a 6 point game, so far.
