[i]Sixteen players from North Carolina's 2005 national championship team issued the following statement Friday responding to former teammate Rashad McCants' allegations of academic misconduct:

Interesting that Mary the Whistle Blower says five players on the 2005 National Championship team took a total of 51 independent study and/or no-show lecture classes. That works out to about 10 classes each, or about 25% of credit hours needed for a degree. Are you kidding me??

Apparently the Indianapolis Star ran a story on Shawn May about four years ago, where 'May said he started as a double major with communications, but dropped it so he could graduate faster after leaving for the NBA. Afro-American and African studies, May said, offered "more independent electives, independent study. I could take a lot of classes during the season. Communications, I had to be there in the actual classroom. We just made sure all the classes I had to take, I could take during the summer."'

Don't you hate it when you have to actually show up for class. How inconvenient!

So McCants is not a reliable source because hes nuts and crazy and blah blah blah.........but hes smart enough to make the Deans list for a semester? These guys have been cheating for years and I promise you they aren't the only ones. They just happen to be the ones to get caught. Lie others have mentioned I just think this adds fuel to the fire for those large conferences that are ready to rid themselves of the NCAA restrictions and turn college sports in to semi-pro athletics.

I agree. UNC-CHeat will get away with this scott free. They have perpetrated the most egregious academic fraud in the history of college sports and they will walk away clean because of who they are. All the while, App serves a postseason ban for academic shortcomings. The NCAA is a joke.

Keep in mind, the NCAA said UNC's situation is strictly an "academic matter." Yet, App serves a postseason ban for poor academic grades. Unreal bull$$$$.

well, I wouldn't say they got off scotch free. growing up in NC, I heard almost daily from Carolina fans that the thing which separated them from other schools, was the "Carolina Way", a code of honor that Carolina alumi, present students, including athletes never cheat, never took short cuts, and always act in the most honorable way possible. It was this code that alumi proudly held over the heads of other schools, especially NC schools. It was the one thing in their minds that separated them from everyone else. Now, the thing they hold most dear, is gone forever, they have had to face the facts that they are no better than State, Wake, App, or even ECU. I guarantee this hurts the alumi alot more than any sanctions the NCAA could administer.

Yeah, they don't care anymore. Almost every UNC fan I've discussed this with uses the "everyone-else-does-it" excuse. They are admitting, perhaps unintentionally, that UNC is no better than anyone else.

The "It happens everywhere" excuse is what gets me.

In one breath, there's no way it happens here at Chapel Hill, that is not the Carolina Way. In the 2nd breath, "what's the big deal, it happen everywhere."

The baby blues know the truth, but refuse to believe it. They are sweating this out for sure. Unfortunately, like always they will get off free. They will take the same course of action they always do. They deny it until the media lays off, and it is "forgotten about." I think it is funny that they think the topic should be dropped since the other players from the '05 team came out and said it's not true. Think about that for a second. Do you really think the other players are going to come out and say it's true? Are they really going to agree with Rashad and more than likely give up their national championship? Most of these guys don't play basketball anymore, and were more than likely hired by a boss who believed they were legit graduates of UNC-CH. So to come out and say what Rashad says is true, would discredit all of their "accomplishments" as well. Possibly putting their careers in jeopardy. Fingers crossed that they finally get what is coming to them.

Is there not a way for us to contact the NCAA and voice our concerns? I have been searching the NCAA website and cannot find a place to email or call and it not be about season tickets to the university of your choice.

The NCAA is a joke now. To put a post-season ban on Appalachian for sub-par grades is one thing. To completely overlook the fact that UNC has been making up classes and letting their student-athletes skate by so they can compete is another thing. If the NCAA lets them off the hook while they continue to reprimand every other "smaller" school, then they have lost all credibility in my mind.

I can't stand UNC. The fact that they consider themselves "THE" University of North Carolina makes me want to puke.

Yep, but this kind of stuff could have been happening when Dean was there, too. Maybe it just didn't see the light of day. Who knows. This kind of thing just doesn't pop up all of a sudden.
