For whatever reason, I’ve never really gotten into hockey. I do find it exciting, especially the playoffs…
I’ve been watching it a lot more. With Team USA taking gold and now the Canes winning the Stanley Cup, I am quickly becoming a much bigger fan!
Hopefully you watched the emotion from those players last night after they got to hoist the cup. One thing I love about hockey being “unpopular” compared to the other big pro sports is that it’s not nearly as tarnished with corporate blabbery. The owner is not up there with the cup thanking Tide & Dr Pepper before handing it off to his kids.
You get to see the players - the captain - hoist the cup first and the raw emotion that goes with it. Half those guys were probably playing with nasty injuries that are usually released after the finals. Yes they’re millionaires but you can tell these guys go to war with each other and that’s clear in their postgame interviews as well.
I think the issue is here (South) you don't really have local players to know playing since you were following them in HS/College. It just isn't really a southern sport, though it does seem to be growing some. I saw the pics of the 2006 watch party in the arena in Raleigh, didn't hardly look like 1/4 of it was filled. I didn't even realize it was '97 when the Canes moved to NC, hockey for people that grew up here before the '00s just wasn't really a thought.
Although not a terribly popular sport as you say, in NC the Winston-Salem Polar Twins in started in1973.
The Greensboro Generals started in the late 50s
Charlotte had the Checkers back in the 70s and then again in early 2000s
Fayettville has been around a while
Salem VA ( Roanoke area) has had teams since the 70s.
But to your point it sure was not top of mind in thCarolinas and Virginia
It really took an influk of folks from the north to make it what it is today. I remeber the first couple of years there were more away jerseys in the stands than home ones. I know the first year I wore Red Wings. You looked around and saw Boston, Newyork, Chicago and it went on. Today it is all red and Black.
