Re: High Country Hurricane Damage
I was driving home earlier and on the Raleigh sports radio show a guy from High School OT was talking about how several western high schools had suffered extensive damage as well. Sports is secondary to life and personal loss but that’s one more financial hit especially with schools who rely on game income.

Re: High Country Hurricane Damage
help is on the way from the Grand Strand. A local tire dealer who has about 12 locations is currently acting as a drop off for supplies.
And the company I work with is working on a fundraiser this Thursday. We'll accept cash, credit cards, and supplies. Boss lady is going make a 10 round trip to deliver what we've collected in person. There is a place 5 hours away that is acting as a distribution and delivery site. There has been an outpouring of support from so many here that have received help during various storms, floods and hurricanes.
Let the people know. Help is coming!

We may are rising as the waters recede , our true sense of humanity here in these mountains. Unbelievable acts of sacrifice and kindness. I’m doing what I can for those that can’t. Drop in the bucket.

My GF's sister had just moved to swannanoa from Houston over a year ago- bottom of their house is under water. They made it out last night and came down to Charlotte. I'm working with a handful of community agencies and businesses to do recovery and support. Heading up the mtn to asheville with supplies, totes and buckets tomorrow. I'll update on any needs etc

I've got a contact with the county effort in Asheville and DSS if anyone has interest in helping out and does not know where to start. They have acquired a large warehouse of i26 as a staging area.Captain Morgan wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2024 1:24 pmhelp is on the way from the Grand Strand. Re: High Country Hurricane Damage
We just went through something similar in Southport due to “unnamed storm”. The washed out bridges are the sticking point when it comes to roads. You can fill dirt and pave fairly quickly but building bridges is time consuming. We lost one major bridge into Southport that has isolated the town and created a major traffic issue. What comes with that is not only hassle but loss of business for restaurants and shops.
I fear there will be a lot of mom and pop’s in the HC who cannot sustain even a modest time where customers can’t or decide not to visit and buy. So many things come from an event like this. Heartbreaking…

We live in south Asheville (technically Fletcher/Fairview). Just got cell service back. Still no power, we have a well, so no water.
Never seen anything like this in my life. I was born and raised here, did live in Charleston for a few years and went through some hurricanes. Nothing comes remotely close to this. The devastation to my town is unreal. Whatever death toll you are hearing, it’s much higher. They are literally finding bodies in trees after the water goes down. Just horrific stuff. Hard to even wrap my head around what’s happened. The damage we have pales in comparison to the tragedy other families are experiencing.
I know most of us live in WNC and have been impacted. Anything and everything helps at this moment. Continued prayers also much appreciated. WNC is a special place and we are coming together and will get through this, but man it’s depressing seeing the town you grew up in torn to shreds.

Glad you are ok. I grew up in fletcher and seeing all the destruction to the area is heart breaking. Places I remember going to as a child are now gone.appstate24 wrote: ↑Tue Oct 01, 2024 1:20 pmWe live in south Asheville (technically Fletcher/Fairview). Just got cell service back. Re: High Country Hurricane Damage
Hers my update. Lost power in Flat Rock Friday morning around 3:00 am. Today is the first day I’ve had any communication. Daughter and parents are in Boone talked with them they’re are OK. Hendersonville is like a War zone. It’s so bad I’m not sure I even know what to say. It hit me hard today as I sat in a line with Wife and youngest daughter at First Baptist church Hendersonville as they were handing out free meals. While I ate the delicious meal, I kinda got overwhelmed watching my community in such a bad situation. Every road has some kind of major infrastructure damage or is completely gone. You can’t go 20 yards without seeing some kind of catastrophic damage. We are better than some we have a generator and city water (can’t drink ) and we’ll survive but it’s going to forever change our beloved WNC. Love you guys stay safe.

Re: High Country Hurricane Damage
Was able to serve alongside some members of the football team today. They were packing supplies for us to deliver to very rural areas. Those guys were great ambassadors for our university and I was proud to see them there working hard for this awesome community. Coach Clark was there too and took a minute to talk with us. We went to the town of Creston and I was amazed at how many roads were damaged. There were at least 25 spots where the road had fallen off into a hole. So much need in those areas. The news outlets will fade in their coverage and whatever bleeds will lead in the months ahead, but please don't forget that area as I know you won't. It was an inspiration to see how the community pulls together and how our Mountaineer athletes were right there in the middle of it.

Believe me I would love to watch a football game. And take a shower. Eat a hot healthy meal . Sleep more than a few hours. All the things I so stupidly took for granted. Hug your children tonight. Kiss your lover , long and deep. Be kind to the least of those you encounter my friends because everything can be fleeting.
