Jr F Mike Kobani and So G Landon Goesling have asked for and been granted release from the team. No real surprise and it does open up another spot to hopefully bring in a couple of bigs. We were down to one spot before today. We've got just under a month before the regular signing period starts to get some front court help in here. Fingers crossed that we don't see any more transfers from higher up the ladder.

I posted about two weeks ago that attrition and turnover could be expected. Coach has a one-on-one eval session with each player the week following the last game of the season. I know Coach will make every effort to get them placed where they can succeed in academics and get more PT on the court.

Meanwhile, for all practical purposes, Coach Fox is already in Year 3 of his 5 Year Contract. He has to be feeling the pressure. I know he plans to add two or three more players to the roster for next season. Coach Allison spent the entire week at the National Junior College Championship Tourney in Hutchinson, Kansas. The championship game was played last night--between Hutchinson JuCo and Salt Lake City CC. He should come home with a notebook full of notes about prospects.

Fox needs to show some results this coming season. So far he has cleaned us up academically but we are on a downward spiral on the court. He has had 1.5 seasons to recruit ( I say 1.5 because of the time he was hired for his first season) and has a 21-39 record to show for it. 16-24 in conference. I watch the games online and while I do agree that a program has to adjust to a new coaches system, the coach also needs to adjust to his players until his system can be fully implemented regardless of the type of player currently on the team. This is not exactly a powerhouse basketball conference. There were only 2 teams in the top 100 rpi. There were 6 in the bottom 200 rpi. We have had teams in the past that would be in the top 3 in this conference. The argument of "well recruits just won't come to Boone" doesn't fly in this case. We need to be at Worst 5th in the conference this next season or I'll be throwing coach Fox in to question. Did Capel mess things up, absolutely, but that is the great thing about college sports, its a 4 year revolving door. Cleaning up doesn't take very long. I'll be looking forward to seeing what he can accomplish with his second full off season.

I think if they transfer in good academic standing, then I don't think it adversely impacts the APR.

Here's an infograph from the NCAA on APR. This only applies for students getting athletically-related financial aid. I know Goesling was put on scholarship in Spring 2015, but beyond that I don't know. Kobani was always on scholarship.

What it doesn't explain is that a player who transfers but finishes their education somewhere else can get that point back for the school. For instance, when Ty Toney graduates from Eastern Michigan, App gets a free point in the year he graduates.

The good news is that this upcoming May, the new APR will drop the single-year score from one of Capel's really bad academic years (sub 900), so it'll go higher as long as the new single-year score is in the projeced range (950-970).

So leaving without a degree does hurt though it can be a wash if the new school takes care to graduate the student that left us.

Nah, we aren't getting better than Coach Fox tbh. We knew this was going to be a long, long rebuilding process. I have complete faith he is the right man for the job, no reason to already be placing pressure on him. This place is impossible to win at because the entire fanbase only thinks the school plays one sport.

I really don't think the fan base makes it "impossible to win" at App. It just takes time. While it is true that, in basketball, teams can re-build quickly, that is much easier at a power school where they can bring in some 5 star recruits. At our level, we have to bring in talent that might be raw and develop it. Also, basketball puts limits on scholarships and the APR issues that Capel left us makes that situation even more difficult.

I do hope that Fox can score a couple of strong recruits (especially a true post) and start showing more positive results on the court. He has shown the ability to get more out of what we have. We just need to get some horses in Boone.

If we can beat Arkansas-Little Rock, we can beat the rest of the Sun Belt. I know it had to be a perfect game, but we did it. We can continue to do it. JMO

I can't buy that it's "impossible to win" at App when we had three straight 20+ win seasons when I was a student in the late '90s. I'm sure that seems like ancient history to people who are in college now, but we were still considered a football school back then, we still had a recent history of 20 loss seasons, and we also played in a glorified high school gym. All it takes is the right coach.

And I also don't agree that we're on a "downward spiral." Remember that we won five D1 games the year before Fox got here. Our kenpom ranking has risen from 331 to 265 to 251 (yes, up 14 spots from last year to this). Yes we took a step back in wins this year, but some of that is just due to bad luck; last year we won more than our share of close games, whereas this year most of those went the other way. (Last year we ranked 31st in the nation in "luck"; this year we were 219).

Fox took over a dumpster fire. I do think we should expect some progress next year but give him at least 4 years to turn this ship around. I would like to see App start a season the way we've finished the last couple of years.

I feel like Varsity being in the center of campus helped some. I used to go to games after working in the library...just a few steps away. I was thinking that the capacity was 8,000, whereas Holmes capacity is 8350 or around 9000 depending on the configuration. Either way, we rocked that place quite a few times when in was there from the mid-90's until 2000. I remember some App-Davidson games feeling like a mini Duke-UNC game.

Varsity Gym is home to almost all my App basketball memories, and I remember it fondly. Definitely was in a more student-friendly location than Holmes. It simply wasn't a modern basketball facility.

Regardless, the point is, App can win at basketball.

For us "older" alums, We shouldn't forget that after having the second worse team in the nation under Maravich for several years, things turned pretty quickly with the arrival of a young Bobby Cremins and Gene Littles for th better. And yes in VARSITY GYM.

On second thought, I think you are right. Some of the difference lies in the fact that Holmes has end zone seating whereas Varsity did not.
