In somewhat of a role reversal, GaSouth's Lady Iggles (RPI #320) take the floor at HCC at 5 PM for a contest that could help decide the final contestant list for the upcoming SunBelt Tourney. The Iggles (1-15), along with S.Alabama, have long been mathematically eliminated from the Tourney's eight slots. The RPI # 161 ASU women (6-10), on the other hand, are presently tied with UL-Monroe for that eighth place tourney slot. Only one of those two will survive. That makes today's game a MUST WIN for the Apps. UL-M, by the way, is playing at S.Alabama at 5 PM.
Today's game with former SoCon rival GaSouth is the second of two games this season. The Apps won the first contest 77-74 in Hanner Fieldhouse on Jan. 29. Appalachian has struggled to a 1-5 record in this month of February; and is coming off an 80-70 setback at GaState. The Iggles have lost their last 12 and are coming off an 80-63 home setback to South Alabama Saturday.
Today's game starts a stretch in which the Apps finish the campaign with four straight home contests. The Mountaineers are 7-4 at home and 3-3 in home league games. Senior Maryah Sydnor leads the Apps in scoring and rebounding with 17.7 points and 8.8 rebounds a game. Fellow senior Katie Mallow follows at 11.1 ppg.
GaSouth is 1-9 on the road and 1-6 in road league games. Six of the Eagles' last 12 games have been one-possession contests at the under-4 media timeout and two have gone into overtime. Angel McGowan leads the team and is ranked 10th in the Sun Belt in scoring with an average of 13.6 points per game. Patrice Butler follows with 12.2 points per game and Anna Claire Knight adds 11.4 points per game.
By the numbers, the Apps are strong 10 point favorites. What could possibly go wrong here?
SERIES HISTORY: AppState Leads 26-17 (W1) (Tonight's contest will be the 44th meeting.)
