I like Matt but there is a big part of me that thinks we need to cut ties with anyone who has been a part of this program in the past. We need new blood. Again, not a slam at all on Matt, this is just one man's opinion!!

I think we get the best man for the job regardless if he coached here or not.

Unless he shared a room with Michael Jordan.

Jason Capel Has NOT Been Fired

It's just as improper to say that Jason Capel was fired; as it was to say that Jerry Moore was fired. Both were on contracts with very specific expiration dates. That seems to be an extremely hard concept for some of our folks to comprehend. It means that when the calender reaches a certain clearly stated date; that all coaching responsibilities end and all salary and vacation have been earned; and will be paid in accordance with the written contract or agreement. It means our agreement with "you" is over and we'll be entering into an agreement with someone else. Period. No one was fired!

Capel's contract not renewed at Appalachian St.

Capel is in the final year of a four-year deal that expires at the end of March. The former North Carolina player -- whose brother Jeff is on Duke's staff -- was the youngest coach in Division I when he was hired in 2010.

The Mountaineers went 9-21 this season, were 5-11 in their final season in the Southern Conference and were eliminated in their league tournament opener by Samford. They went 53-70 in four seasons under Capel.

Appalachian State joins the Sun Belt next season and Cobb said, "We have decided to do so with new leadership."

Capel was 30 when he was promoted in April 2010 to replace Buzz Peterson after Peterson left for UNC Wilmington. Capel led Appalachian State to a 16-15 record in his first season in 2010-11 but followed that with three losing seasons. His teams went 32-38 in SoCon play.

The school says its search for Capel's replacement will begin immediately.

Anyone who doesn't have their contract renewed surely feels like they were fired. ;)

For Appalachian State basketball? Is this a serious suggestion?

Cobb said at the presser that he's looking for a coach with head coaching experience, regardless of level. That rules out McMahon.

Bruce Pearl is a pipe dream, but I don't think Seth Greenberg would be completely out of the realm of possibility.

Bruce was an elite coach. As soon as his probation period expires (after this year I believe) he will get another big time job, maybe even Tennessee again since many of their boosters want him back.

Pretty stupid way to approach this thing. Cobb's going from one extreme to another. Why eliminate so many qualified assistant coaches? But who can even begin to understand the mind of Charlie Cobb?

Im glad we can finally move forward, and hopefully get some excitement back into this program. Capel was put into a situation that he clearly wasn't ready for, but that's our fault for not hiring someone who was ready. It will be interesting to see how this hiring process plays out.
