What's next for The Moose, AppGrad78 and 24/7?

We don't have a Men's Basketball Coaching Vacancy as of 6 February, but we're likely to have one on or before 10 March. Our "go-to" guys have to get rested up to keep us up to date on the approach our administration will take to resolve the Capel contract and/or recruit and hire a completely new MBB staff.

It gets messy along the way, because we don't know how soon UNC-BOG head Tom Ross will name our new Chancellor. Will Charlie Cobb have a green light to proceed to hire a new staff'; or will the red light be on until the new Chancellor can become more familiar with the basketball program's up and down struggles and 13 years of empty seats at HCC?

Methinks Cobb will be under so much close scrutiny this time around, that he won't dare make a handful of calls over a weekend and name a coach from just down the hall. This time, he has to get it right--not just for ASU, but also for his vita and for his sheer survival. By that, I mean that Charlie's soon going to be working for a Chancellor who didn't hire him. That can be a really strained relationship--particularly if a high profile sport is making ugly headlines and seats continue to go empty.

Great points all around Chuck. I hope that this plays to our favor this time around and that we are thoughtful in our next head BB coach search. Time will tell but I agree with you that Charlie needs to make a splash because it has been a while since he has been mentioned in a positive light.

If I were in Charlie Cobb's shoes, beginning today I'd be away from Boone thru mid-week to pay a personal visit to Bobby Lutz and to Seth Greenberg to assess their interest in taking a new team into the SunBelt Conference. If Lutz shows interest, I'm going to arrange to have him on campus as soon as it's feasible (his team is still in regular season play and on the bubble for the NCAA tourney). If Greenberg shows interest, I'm going to arrange to have him on campus as soon as next Tuesday, March 11. If neither have interest, then my next contacts are with Mike Rhoades, ass't coach at VCU, Matt McMahon, ass't coach at Murray State, head coach Linc Darner at D-II Florida Southern and with head coach Darren "Dip" Metress at D-II Georgia Regents Univ. (the former Augusta State). While pursuing these possible candidates, I have no doubt that many others will make direct contact with my office or cross my radar screen.

By 7 PM Thursday evening, I'd be in Asheville for the SoCon Tourney. I'd also be digging into the credentials of some of these guys as part of my late-night homework...

Yeah, every one of 'em except Greenberg! He doesn't need ESPN's permission.

Speaking of ESPN, I wonder what Fran Fraschilla makes? And I wonder if he's served enough time in purgatory as punishment for LoboGate2 to try the college bench again?

Bacari Alexander – Michigan, TJ Cleveland – Arkansas, Mike Dunlap – St. Johns, Andre LeFleur – Providence, Bobby Lutz – North Carolina State, Jack Murphy – Memphis, Matt McMahon – Murray State, Josh Postorino – Georgia Tech, Heath Schroyer – UNLV.

That's some mighty impressive company McMahon is lumped in with and more than likely the only one ib that list App can afford. Hope Cobb can get past his ego and reach out to Matt.

Matt McMahon – Murray State
The only coach from a true “Mid-Major” program on the list, Matt McMahon has proven his ability to stand with the best assistants in college basketball. Coming by way of UNC- Wilmington and Appalachian State, Matt was scooped up by new head coach Steve Prohm for his keen recruiting abilities and high basketball IQ. Along with helping Murray to a top 10 ranking in the polls this year, McMahon was the primary reason behind the signing of highly touted recruits Erik McCree and C.J. Ford.

cant see Greenberg even considering App, he is well respected in the collage ranks, and at the end of the year, will probably have his pick of schools, doubt we will be one of them. Now, Lutz, ya, I could see interest on both sides, I don't think he is that great of a coach, but, the bar isn't exactly set very high at this point, anyone is going to look great.

As much as I would love to have McMahon back, I believe App needs a coach who has head coaching experience to dig us out of the APR mess. There are a number of good coaches in the low-major ranks who can have their financial situation improved by what we'll be offering.

So I'd like to throw Mike Young's (Wofford) name in there. He's proven to find gems in unlikely places and get the best out of his teams.

I wholeheartedly agree with Mike Young. I've started several times to post his name--but had second thoughts a-la the Mike Ayers "thing." I had to pinch myself to believe Nate Woody would leave. Young has 25 years invested with Wof BB. Before the start of this season, Young had been on the Wofford bench for 693 contests over the past 24 seasons and he sports a Houston Fancher type record--something close to a .500 winning percentage; but all of his players graduate!

The other side of the coin is that Young is just now at the top of his game. Now's the time to pick him off if we can. He'd certainly fix the APR as fast as anyone could. And his players play with self-discipline and follow his game plan. That would kind of unique if we could install some of that in HCC. ;)

Whether Young would sell more tickets than Fancher is a head-scratcher! That why I keep throwing Greenberg's name out. His kids also graduate; but a lot of folks buy tickets for "Greenberg's show." He's a showman out of the P. T. Barnum mold. He's also known for being a builder.

I asked a friend of mine who is a long-time close friend of Matt's dad about his interest in APP if it comes open - He told me his dad said - No, at this point he had no interest --- I guess it could be interpreted in various ways ---

A member of this forum has spoken with Matt recently and told me that Matt has long since put Cobb's snub behind him. It would be extremely hard to turn down an offer to become a head basketball coach in a two-bid league like the Sunbelt. Of course, the SB could become a one bid league again if no one picks up WKU's weight.

I wouldn't take too much stock in these lists. I think the main qualification is being friends with whoever writes the article - and that's not to say McMahon isn't a good coach. But, I would note that he spent the vast majority of his career learning under a career .506 coach we fired. His second mentor is a career .541 coach we hate. Then again, I suspect he has learned a lot these 3 years at Murray State. I think it makes him a much more attractive candidate than he was 4 years ago. I can't imagine he would turn down an offer from us or pretty much any other D1 school who wants to make him a head coach. Mid-major assistant coaches just don't turn down HC jobs very often.

Alvin Gentry would be a neat hire, but I'm sure we couldn't afford him and we probably need a guy with recruiting contacts and someone with knowledge of the academic side of coaching considering our predicament. Just having a guy who has 'NBA Head Coach' on his resume' would open a lot of doors and bring a lot of free publicity.

Alvin Gentry as our next head coach is a horrifically bad idea IMO!...

Not sure we could pull John Lentz away at this point. He would be a good hire for another 6-8 years to rebuild our program and help us become a hotter destination.

http://texassports.com/coaches.aspx?rc=597&path=mbball

I've thrown his sons name out before as someone who would be cheap and young. While he only has 9 years assisting and 4 at Texas Both these guys know the recruiting of NC and would suit us for the time being to get us out of this debacle.

As far as head coaches go I'm hoping we can just get someone to get us out of this mess and get back on par with our brethren programs. We aren't going to be pulling in anyone top notch while in our current situation. For those that keep chanting bobby he wont be coming to app. His family is pretty rooted down there right now with kids in school.

If you want an NBA coach (obviously a looooooooooong shot) then go for Nate McMillan. Raleigh Roots and a good coach.

Greenberg has one NCAA trip in his last 16 years as a head coach.

Lutz has a pretty good track record, but I don't entirely understand why people are so enamored with him either. UNCC went downhill his last 5 years there, and State has done the same since Gottfried's first year.

If we're going to hire an assistant, shouldn't it be someone from a winning program?

I don't really want an NBA coach. Mine was more of comment based on publicity. I don't think he'd make a good college coach.

There are some parallels between SS hired for football and Matt possibly for basketball. Now Matt has some worldly experience. Plus CC will not have to deal with MH this time around.
