Angel steps down as WBB coach
Due to personal reasons, so it says. Hope everything is OK.
One of the nicest coaches at App State and a good person.

I hope it’s not a relapse.

Like both of you, I just hope she's healthy. I'm a little concerned that the release doesn't say that she is, because surely they know people will wonder.
I don't know her personally, but I did chat with her for a few minutes at a YC event a few years back, and found her to be engaging and genuine. Didn't even talk basketball, just life stuff.

Didn’t see this coming although there has been some discussion among the brass about the program’s progress.

Re: Angel steps down as WBB coach
She is healthy and doing well. Just an overall lack of investment from the athletic dept. If not for title IX they might have car pooled and packed PB&Js when going on the road. Add NIL as seriously lacking and it makes it hard operating with one hand behind your back. Year after year after year after year. Other SBC programs making serious investments in their WBB programs. No hard feelings. It was time. Coach Angel did a lot with less and was/is an outstanding leader and human. She’s going to be just fine and will pop up again when the time is right. She hung a banner in Holmes and graduated everyone! Can’t ask for much more. It will be interesting to see what direction Doug goes.

Kelly Harper was just let go by Tennessee. Doubt we can afford her, but give her a call.

Why did they let her go? They made the tournament and won a game.appstate24 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 4:53 amKelly Harper was just let go by Tennessee. Doubt we can afford her, but give her a call.

Because she wasn't Pat Summit and she couldn't get past that juggernaut known as South CarolinaAppStFan1 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:19 amWhy did they let her go? I was not sure if something else happened but that is not surprising. Stupid reason to fire her. Are they expecting to lure Dawn Staley or Mulkey or the Iowa coach in to Knoxville?BUTCH1991 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:38 amBecause she wasn't Pat Summit and she couldn't get past that juggernaut known as South CarolinaAppStFan1 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:19 amWhy did they let her go? It is like any unrealistic fan base. Vols were at the top for a period of time under Summit. They have declined. The two coaches since summit have overall records that lady Vols fan are not used to...The fans and the administration have very high expectations (which is good)..and are worried about becoming UCLA or Indiana and fading to be just another team. ...just my opinionAppStFan1 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:41 amI figured it was due to the fact they were not a final four team but had not keep up so I thought maybe there was more. Re: Angel steps down as WBB coach
I can see that concern but when you make a coaching change you have to have names in mind that upgrade it. If you can't get a better coach then don't make a change. It will be interesting to see who they get.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:50 amIt is like any unrealistic fan base. Vols were at the top for a period of time under Summit. They have declined. Not if you have egos and think everyone should love Lady Vols and a destination....UCLA thought that for years..and it impacted them.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:55 amI can see that concern but when you make a coaching change you have to have names in mind that upgrade it. What someone should do and people think the reasonable thing to do....is very different to someone inside the bubble of their over inflated impression of where they currently
actually are in the realm of college basketball.

Definitely true but if they don't make a splash hire in the women's world then I am sure many of their boosters will be disappointed. I will be curious to see who they actually go after.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 10:22 amNot if you have egos and think everyone should love Lady Vols and a destination....UCLA thought that for years..and it impacted them.AppStFan1 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 9:55 amI can see that concern but when you make a coaching change you have to have names in mind that upgrade it. Re: Angel steps down as WBB coach
Some one did reach out, but you are right APP can’t afford her. APP should look at Coach Joy from Tennessee staff, we can afford her and she is good coach.appstate24 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 02, 2024 4:53 amKelly Harper was just let go by Tennessee. Doubt we can afford her, but give her a call.

Have to imagine that we are close to locking one up. With Spring Tour starting soon, I imagine that they would want them at the events.

The Friday Trustees meeting notice says "contracts." As in more than one.

Re: Angel steps down as WBB coach
It's disappointing to see Elderkin and the program lacking resources to consistently compete and win. Especially now, given how WBB is catching fire across the country. I'd love to see our fanbase get energized around the Lady Mountaineers like we have around the fellas.
BTW, this is another good example of why more folks should get involved with YC. It's not about how much one can/can't donate; rather, it's about what how we can help App State Athletics by getting involved.
