We likely get them again in the tourney. They will be #8 and we are #9. This can be pretty good at times, but so inconsistent. I really don't think this team is consistent enough to make it to the finals. Hard for us to put to good games back to back.
Edit: If USA loses to UL, GS holds the tiebreaker over USA. We will play #8 USA if that happens.

Had the opportunity to take control in each half, squandered em both.Swept by a team that really isn't very good , just better than us.

Assuming Walker was still out tonight to be with family, hope he is doing okay and that the family finds peace.
This is looking ahead a little, Do we only return 4 guys next year that played consistent minutes? 5 with Mantis spot minutes.
Harcum
Abson
Brown
Huntley

If you play slow, like Kerns likes to play control the tempo and call a play every damn time, you have to do one of two things:
1) throw the all inside 3 out of 4 possessions, which they don't do (by the way this is UNC problem also)
2) have some dang good guards that can penetrate, make 3's, and make 80% FT's (which App doesn't have)
And unfortunately that ain't this team. It has a ton small forwards or power forwards, which are good at rebounding.
This team doesn't have good guard play. They beat the Sun Belt bottom feeders, 3 non d-1 teams we have never heard of, and the worse ACC team ever (Lenior-Rhyne beat Louisville worse than App did so don't argue with me about this) Abson and Harcum need to return or the future is dark.

100%. 3 guards walked, 1 guard was hurt, 1 suspended. Only 1 team can slow the pace down and consistently win on defense that I’ve seen…any takers?DenverOfTheEast wrote: ↑Fri Feb 24, 2023 9:39 pmIf you play slow, like Kerns likes to play control the tempo and call a play every damn time, you have to do one of two things:

Regular season ended the same as football, losing to a team we should beat.

We finish in a 3 way tie for 7th and gain the 9 seed. With their loss tonight USA finished tied with us and GS. GS was 3-0, USA 1-1 and we were 0-3 in the games played between the three.
USA beat us by 17 in Mobile.

The good news, 500ish. Again. The bad news, I guess after 55 years of being an APP fan… this is as good as it gets.

Personally feel this is not a bad start. Need a point guard that can either distribute the ball and drive to basket or light it up from 3.. doubt we find one that does both that comes to App.,...a Gregory type player, and another big man to spell the others. That an 8 man rotation. If Abson has the "want to/desire" to get better offensively, it changes the game for App. If he becomes a beast inside, there are not many teams in SBC that have an Abson.311neers wrote: ↑Fri Feb 24, 2023 9:37 pmAssuming Walker was still out tonight to be with family, hope he is doing okay and that the family finds peace.

Brown is not a full time PG. He can spell the starter if we can find one in portal.
....and the others improve their game in off-season...
Not saying we have a SBC champ contender...but we can be better than this year. Many college programs would like to have 3 experienced starters back (I am excluding Brown as a starter)
Hopefully, Kerns can find some talent in the portal and guys live in the weight room and gym in the off-season.

Well South Alabama is as tough a draw as we could get for opening game. At least if they gut out a tournament went it’ll be for real!

Could not care less about anything UNC does or any issues they may have. How does that pertain to us?DenverOfTheEast wrote: ↑Fri Feb 24, 2023 9:39 pmIf you play slow, like Kerns likes to play control the tempo and call a play every damn time, you have to do one of two things:

Has there ever been a team that had 2 of their 5 starters shoot free throws in the 30% range? Just pitiful

Comparison - figured majority of this board watches ACC more closely than App State basketball.... Hubert and Kerns call plays every time, neither feed the post player nearly enough was my point. Abson shoots 60% from the Field -- needs to get more shots. Bacot gets most of his points mainly from Offensive rebounds after their back court shoots bricks.appfanjj wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 8:36 amCould not care less about anything UNC does or any issues they may have. I try not to bash any player unless they do something stupid that hurts a team but it's hard to fathom any basketball player from high school to the pros shooting below 40% (much less below 70%). X just looks like he throws the ball at the basket. Old man rant but I think the days of the "gym rat" are about gone. These kids now want to jack 3's and dunk it and the AAU circuit has killed traditional development. If we could shoot better from the line we could generate lots of old school 3 point plays.

That my friend is it in nutshell. AAU wants to win to the point of bringing in out of area or out of state ringers to join a team for a weekend tournament just to win. Skills, drills, basics, fundamentals are "not cool" so they get ignored. I coached our middle school team from 1982-1984 and told them this about free throws: middle schoolers should hit at least 60%, high schoolers 70%, college players 80%. Minimum. There's no excuse for anything less than 60% from 15 feet and nobody guarding. If you can hit 35% from the arc you can hit a FT. Rant over.
We don't slide at Appalachian State. It's a sign of weakness.

That’s why the european game is kinda taking over. They are the most technical and skilled players. Maybe we should play the guard that started most of the year that can shoot fts and 3pointers. Just a thought, unless his injury is holding him back. His injury put us in a tough spot.scatman77 wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 10:54 am"These kids now want to jack 3's and dunk it and the AAU circuit has killed traditional development."bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Sat Feb 25, 2023 10:41 amI try not to bash any player unless they do something stupid that hurts a team but it's hard to fathom any basketball player from high school to the pros shooting below 40% (much less below 70%). X is not a point guard , he is our best on ball defender and it appears the best athlete on the floor ,for either team , a difference maker.I would love to see him in a traditional "three" role and yes we need to bring in a part-time contract shooting coach for he and JA.
