GAME THREAD - MBB vs Georgia State, Thurs 1/26 6:30pm
Boone, NC
6:30pm
ESPN+
App State 82% chance to win
App -6.5
GSU 9-11 vs App 11-10. Stats say we’re 6 points better on offense and equal on defense.
These are the types of games that make me nervous. We had a good win Saturday. We’re playing team we’re favored against Thursday. It feels like an opportunity for an emotional letdown.

Preseason I believe Ga St. was near us in conference record I believe..records above seem to indicate pretty equal teams.

It is just one of those things where if we come out with an underdog mentality. Play great defense, hustle for rebounds and play unselfish we win. When we ever come out thinking we are better than a similar team, we play more selfish and we lose. We have to come out of the gates thinking our backs are against the wall for 40 minutes. Thats who we are.

Watching the FU/Samford game with students literally standing on the sidelines throughout the game. Reminded me of Varsity where we did the same during the Cremins years. One heck of an atmosphere for college basketball , especially at this level.

Back in the good old days when we didn't obsess about the fantasy of winning the football NC (or being in the playoffs) at the FBS level (not FCS) and when winning the SOCON meant something games were really fun. It wasn't that long ago when I had to listen to App football games on the radio. For some reason the local station here in Fayetteville actually broadcasted App games for a few years. Varsity gym was crazy at times. Those seats behind the basket weren't the best but me and some buddies usually got right down on the floor across from the opposing team's bench.

I've heard people say that renovating Varsity Gym would've been a better decision than building Holmes. In my years at App, I only went in Varsity gym 2-3 times on errands and whatnot. I'll admit I didn't go to many basketball games, even though we had a decent team, because Holmes was just kind of a sterile, boring atmosphere. I would've loved to have seen the basketball team back in the Cremins years.bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 7:09 amBack in the good old days when we didn't obsess about the fantasy of winning the football NC (or being in the playoffs) at the FBS level (not FCS) and when winning the SOCON meant something games were really fun. Back in "The Day" - 100 years ago when I was in college (not App) the only basketball games on TV were on Saturday afternoons - we go to weeknight games and the Saturday games were always at night --- Just a different world but I do agree to get anywhere back near those days App would have to have an outstanding teams that could win 20+ games - win every home game - play exciting basketball and bring better OCC opponents to Boone -
Of course, this is nothing most of you haven't already stated so I guess my question is - Will this ever be possible?

We need to renovate both. Football had its $100M NEZ, now it's time to spend $10M on Holmes and Varsity (wrestling, basketball, other programs). Holmes was probably built with the thought of having enough seats for summer/winter graduations. Holmes needs to decrease in size a little and varsity just needs a complete overhaul. State and UNC have renovated their old arenas (State even plays at Reynolds some, it looks amazing). It would be really cool to have a few games at a renovated Varsity Gym (centralized on campus, maybe weeknights at Varsity for the students mostly) and a bulk of the games played at a refreshed Holmes (weekends) with more parking around it.MrCraig wrote: ↑Thu Jan 26, 2023 11:32 amI've heard people say that renovating Varsity Gym would've been a better decision than building Holmes. I believe both women's teams for State and UNC play in the old, but renovated, arenas. For App. St., Not sure why we would play some games at Varsity, even if renovated..as Holmes is right down the street. For State, PNC is well off campus.
Overall, I do agree that Varsity could use renovations.
I wonder if the new East side premium seating, once done, may help funding that could be used for renovations at Varsity. We have a powerhouse of a wrestling program. Be nice to see rewarded with a better renovated facility.
