Re: GAME THREAD - MBB @ Southern Miss, Sat 12/31 3pm
We've now lost five straight to D1 competition. In four of those we lead at halftime and in three of those four lost lost by double digits. We closed the gap in the fourth (USM) but after leading at half we trailed by 18 before a furious finish. In the game we trailed at half (MU), they blew it open in the second half. Not sure what's up but that's a scary trend.

We don’t have an offense or players to execute individuals creating their own shot. We have players 3-10 to form a good team, we lack those differential 1-2 players to have a great team.

Spot on with that observation. We have some solid players but we don't have that difference maker game in and game out.

What I see are 8-10 points every game where we miss shots at the rim. Most teams maybe one of these a game. If your cold from outside, I get that, but man these misses at the rim are killers every game.

It also seems we don’t want to shoot from 8 feet in. I’ve seen so many open short shots given up to pass back out for a three pointer that often is forced and missed.

Bank shots are a thing of the past, except right around the basket - there was a guy who played at Guilford back in the day when they had NBA guys playing who would shoot bank shots from about 15 feet out on the wings and never miss -

Isn't the point of the square above the rim to use for a bank shot? It really is amazing how few of these shots are taken now. It's all about volume and 3's or dunks.

For shots right around the basket but from out on the wing the box widens a good bit.

Re: GAME THREAD - MBB @ Southern Miss, Sat 12/31 3pm
The studies on this from way back show that if you use the bank shot near the basket the ball will come back to you much more often when you miss, so you get another chance. Also, bank shots have a better chance of going in when you have defensive contact during the shot. Shooting the bank shot is a skill well worth practicing. My high school coach insisted on it and as a high school coach of over 900 games, I did too - particularly for shots of around 12 feet and under, and always on shots at the “bank angle.” Never pushed it for shots dead in front of the basket (though that works, too) and shots nearing the baseline where the angle was more extreme. Elvin Hayes used to bank that 18 footer quite often when he was pushed out of the post. But he didn’t guess much, but that’s another topic for another day.

The 'Bank' is open!
"The Backboard is your friend"
I knew a coach once that would shoot 3 pointers and use the backboard during basketball camp, he would bet the campers he could make 5 in row - taking their candy money daily. ha ha ha
The other thing that is never taught as much as UNC and Coach Smith or Guthridge taught was the jump hook shots by the big man, was there anyone better than Joe Wolf at shooting a jump hook, Brad Daughtery maybe.

When I was young kid, I visited my brother that was at CH. A friend and I were able to get access to Carmichael. No one in the gym. Joe Wolf walks out with a boom box. Sets it on the sideline and begins his workout which included many jump hooks. Not sure how that shot has faded from the game. Seems hard to defend.DenverOfTheEast wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 8:23 amThe 'Bank' is open!

The Jump Half Hook is tough to defend...if not impossible. I am surprised it has left the game as well.BambooRdApp wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 9:24 amWhen I was young kid, I visited my brother that was at CH. Not as much glory as shooting the 3 and you can't pose like you do for a 3.spacemonkey wrote: ↑Tue Jan 03, 2023 9:39 amThe Jump Half Hook is tough to defend...if not impossible.
