“Kerns is the best coaching I’ve seen at App in last 15 years.”

Well, the standard has been so low - that ain’t saying much.

We are 7-6.

3 of our 7 wins are against:

Carlow
Warren Wilson
Regent

We beat 2-11 Louisville on a miracle millisecond. They are ranked in the 300’s in NET rankings.

NC central is our best win according to net rankings, who themselves have only 3 D1 wins and 7 losses.

Which all means very little during conference and post-season play.

The only SBC team going to March Madness (the big dance...not one of the gazillion others they have now) is the SBC tournament winner. In order to make the NIT, we have to come in a close 2nd and number 1 and 2 have to have 1-3 losses only in conference play. If we have winning record in conference play, we may make one of the other gazillion tournaments. This is life in SBC given not high reputation for basketball. Just my opinion.

Kerns and company have made postseason play every year they’ve been in Boone, aside from year one, and they would have made it that season if a global pandemic had not cancelled it. We shall see….

If we were 11-2 right now people would say Kerns is a great coach. If after that start we go .500 in conference play then fail to win the Belt tournament the great start would have been meaningless and quickly forgotten. Great aspect of college basketball is that a 19-12 season can still get you in the Dance. Many a team looks dramatically different in February than they did in December. Almost the opposite of college football when a team looks great out the gate with a huge win (Marshall v ND) then end up closer to .500 and that huge win is also quickly forgotten.

If we were 13-0 OR if we were 0-13 - the only way into the NCAAs is to win the conference tourney so in that regard we are 0-0

19-12 won’t get us dancing unless 3 of those wins are in the SB tournament.

The point of a 19-12 record is that a mid major type team can go like 15-12 and can get hot in their tournament and win it then gets the card punched. That example was just a random number but nearly every year some team gets in with a reasonably bad record. Many a team also struggles through the non-conference slate then turns it on.

This completely ignores building interest in the program and attendance for the conference schedule. Had we added wins at UNCC and Wake to the Louisville and ETSU wins, we would probably have better attendance at our home conference games.

Right, reading the responses above just equates to:

No point watching App basketball until the conference tournament because the rest is meaningless.

Coach Fancher once said "we won 24 games and still no one showed up"

That University the day they built the Holmes Center ruined the basketball program, among hiring Capel and Buzz 2.0. -- nice guy, very good coach when he was young and motivated, but no reason to bring him back for the sequel.

Of course, Buzz did lead us to the championship game that year. Buzz is still the winningest coach at App as D1 program, winning 20 games four of his five seasons at App. We haven't come close to sniffing that kind of success since. His second stint would have been a good segue for new coach to continue that success. However, we know what happened.

And Coach McMahon once said about that sequel season under Buzz "a middle school coach coulda won 20 games with that team. We returned everyone from the previous season".

(Not to beat a dead horse on Buzz but if you truly don't understand the details of rosters, timing, etc, some coaches look better than they appear, Buzz came back right after Curry had left, perfect timing there as well. Buzz sequel season the team was fully loaded, just like Drinkwitz lone season on the sideline of Kidd-Brewer.)

There's no doubt that the next season was going to be a challenge for whomever was coach, but one wonders what it could have been if Buzz had stayed or someone else got the nod.

Capel inherited the same roster that Buzz had in 09-10. Buzz even mentioned that whomever took over after him would have a championship caliber team. Capel went 16-15 (his best record at App) with the same team (plus a few additions) that won 24 the year before. That ship sailed and Kerns was a great hire and his entire staff seems great at player development. If/when we are in the market again Mike Morrell at unca might be worth courting. He’s proven that he can build a program in his 4 years in Asheville, although he might end up getting better offers, much like Bob Richey at Furman.

If I had been in Boone Dec. 6, I still would not have gone to that game. Seems very few did.
