Around the Sun Belt megathread

Unread post by HurricaneYosef » Wed Nov 09, 2022 9:43 pm

Wanted a spot to share what our Sun Belt peers and non conference teams are doing. First thoughts so far:

JMU looks extremely talented offensively this year. They absolutely dominated Hampton tonight

Georgia Southern is the complete opposite offensively, they are going to struggle this year.

Louisville might be one of the worst high major teams in the country. Loss to Lenoir Rhyne, barely beat Chaminade, struggling early against Bellarmine (Down 30-18!). We legit could be favored going into our game next week.

Pre season favorites Louisiana looked really good against Harvard friday night, they play ETSU next. should be a good game to keep an eye on.

JMU ran through a good Buffalo team from the MAC. JMU is averaging 108 ppg through 3 games (2 D1 opponents). JMU could be attempting to have the top football and basketball squads year 1 in the Sun Belt

Louisville lost at the buzzer to Wright St, Louisville is 1-3 (counting exhibitions) this year with losses to a D2 school, an ASUN school, and a Horizon League school. We probably won't be favored Tuesday night, but should fully expect to leave Kentucky with a win.

Texas State looks good again early, 2-0 start to the season with a solid win over Rhode Island on the road

Georgia Southern is bad offensively as I mentioned before, only won 53-32 over D3 Trinity Baptist College.... yikesssssss

Georgia State couldnt pull out a home victory over Georgia Tech. I don't think GaSt will be the contender we are accustomed to seeing them be this season. Like us in football, too much talent lost the last few years

Conference RPI is looking to settle in about the normal range for the conference, little higher then normal in part to the newcomers. It’s still possible it lands above the A10 which would be very cool considering that conferences success in getting at-large bids.

It’s be great to see a concerted effort by the conference to become a consistent multi bid league primarily by more strategic ooc scheduling. It’s not going to be any one&o be series that gets conference there but more things like the MAC tie-in, vastly dropping non D1 games, and finding ways for late season OOC games for your high performers.

Realistically there are probably just a couple Sunbelt teams come February with any shot at an At-Large so finding ways to support them would be great. I do think revised current tournament setup is fine although the idea of a home game for quarterfinals is pretty decent both for bolstering top seeds & turn out would surely be higher if fans knew they’d see a Semi & possible Final in Florida.
