We appear to have some good consistent shooters this year. Should do well

On being a 3 point shooting team versus 2 point team. It really depends on the team makeup. If your dominant inside, that's your game plan. On being a 3 point shooting team, you got to have shooters to perform. Yes the percentage should be lower than a typical 2 point shooting team...but getting 3 for 2. The question is whether a team is shooting at a reasonable % from 3 to offset what a higher % from 2. My observation from last evening, we do have some decent 3 point shooters and some that are 3 point shooting challenged. From a sample of one game (last night) this year and a sample of 5 or so last year...my opinion is we have certain players that should maybe not be shooting as many as they are. I want to see how season plays out to get full season stats for a final conclusion.
If you look at our rebounding stats, it appears so far that we may not have a dominant force down low. I personally am a fan of the 3 pointer when the ball is worked around for an open look. Always take what the D gives you if you are competent in the execution of it. I like the look of this team so far and am excited to see how it plays out. Small sample size, but Kerns has the smarts and some great tools to work with.

A lot teams relying so heavily on the 3 is all analytics based. This generation of players, whether they’re guards or centers grew up shooting a lot of 3’s so they got good at it (better than any generation before them at least). Analytics tell coaches that points per possession increases with a higher number of 3's attempted. The problem obviously is when all your good shooters somehow go cold on the same night and you don’t have a big man who can score in the paint, you’re likely to lose.

The old school fan who reminisces about the days of Ewing doesn’t like it, but it’s the truth.

We do not crash the offensive boards because that’s not our defensive scheme. When the shot goes up we get back to ward off the fast break and get in defensive position. At least that’s how I understand it. We’ve been strong on the defensive boards.

You are correct, but we were out rebounded on the defensive side quite a bit last night. Curious to see if we improve in that as we go along. Still so early.

One thing about this team is we have a ton of depth that I didn't think we would have going in to the season. We can legit play 10-11 guys in a rotation and not really slip off.

Playing 10-11 deep in basketball can sometimes be great, but can also be like in football when you play a 2 QB system because neither take control as the #1

Four players played 30+ minutes last night and another 25. Its not like we were running people in and out of the game. I really believe its the case where we are at least 10 deep and it depends on who we are playing which players off the bench may get more minutes. Mantis didn't play much last night and while he might have been a bit dinged up, Kerns said he didn't play as much because he wasn't a good fit for the style of play from NCCU. I really don't think you are going to see 10 players playing equal amounts of time on the court but that we have ten players who could get significant minutes in some games.

You don't see a whole lot of 6'5" guys who actually take and make shots inside the paint. DG is solid in that medium range. He will get a bunch of old school 3 point plays this year.
