Paul Reynolds, a standout 6-7 G/F/Wing basketball player for Coach Bob Light's Apps from 1958-1962 passed away on Sunday, June 5th after a lengthy illness. Paul played on a team whose starting lineup included Reynolds, 6-7 Wayne Duncan (App State Hall of Fame) and 6-6 "Jumpin'" Jim Richardson. Anyone in attendance in the SRO packed-to-the-rafters Broome-Kirk Gym were in for a show when these three guys were on their game.

Paul, a Jonesville native and Jonesville High School grad (his school was consolidated into Starmount High in '67) still owns all of the Jonesville High basketball records not owned by fellow Jonesville product, Dickie Hemric of Wake Forest College fame). Hemric graduated from Jonesville two or three years ahead of Reynolds.

After numerous knee injuries, Paul exchanged his Converse-All-Star low-cuts for a 30 year career as a YMCA Exec Dir in the up-state of SC and in Wilkesboro, NC. After his retirement from YMCA work, Paul accepted a position with his good friend James Cook and Cook's Sporting Goods of Wilkesboro. Paul had networks of high school and college ADs and coaches in four states and he helped them outfit their teams and stay within their budgets. I suspect quite a few of our MMB folks had a direct line to Paul's v-mail.

Paul lived a long and good life, positively influencing thousands of young lives along the way. He was laid back but could be stern when it was called for. Nevertheless, he was fair and he'll be missed. Rest in peace fellow Mountaineer. Take those patented 20 foot jumpers and reverse layups to the Lord's team.
If it happens to the Apps, it happens to me!

Paul allowed a poor country boy to mow the grass at the Wilkes YMCA to pay for his membership. He was great for our community and did so much for the YMCA. Thank you for posting about his Appalachian career.
