Delph first team and that's it. No Gregory and that's hard to figure.

I was also perplexed by the Texas St coach getting coach of the year for the second year in a row. Yes, his team is in first place, but it seems to me that Kerns and Scott Cross at Troy have done more impressive work in a short amount of time, both inheriting pretty bad programs and implementing their style vs Tx St who, while not the best team in the belt, coach was already on staff and just needed to keep morale and hit cruise.

What was the net gain for App and Troy regular season this year vs last year. I know App jumped to 2nd place this year but don't remember the final regular season last year. I know it was a substantial improvement. What is story for Troy.

To me that seems to be a big factor in metric for COTY otherwise you are just rubber stamping it to the guy who finishes first.

Not to minimize by any means the job Kerns has done and did this year but considering that we won the tournament last year and returned like 95% of our scoring shouldn’t we have finished this high?

My guess, if we hadn't faltered down the stretch, Kerns likely would have been COTY. Went from 10-3 to 12-6 in the last five games.

I'm sure several teams had players they thought should make an all league team.

That's a valid point, but he wasn't recognized last year either. Nobody expected us to be at the top of the conference again and our conference record improved from 7-8 to 12-6. That's a remarkable and measurable improvement. I get Tx State is in first place, but I don't know enough about them to evaluate how much is coaching. I think a bunch of our improvement is directly related to coaching.

Last year Troy finished at the bottom of the conference in the regular season at 4-12. This year they were 10-6 and essentially 2nd place give or take a small hundredth of decimal point. He made the most "progress".

Kerns went from 7th last year (7-8) to 2nd this year (12-6).

However, in Johnson's corner, he has taken over a program in 2020 and in BOTH years as HC he has won the regular season.

Bottomline, I guess the moral of the story is, you get more credit for winning the conference than coming in second. Kerns is making progress but he has to win it.

I think a lot of our success this year is due to experience. Kerns real measure will be how we perform next year with all this experienced talent gone. I am not under valuing the job he has done in turning things around but he has done it with a lot of talent inherited from the Fox years. I do think he gets his players to play hard and I think that is always a testament to the job a coach is doing. If he can steer us to the title game again, then I think he will gain the mark as one of the better coaches in the league.

Remember the voting takes place before the tournament. Would you have voted for a 7-8 coach last year?

Johnson took over a Texas State program that had won 20 games in the two prior years before his becoming head coach. He took over at time when Danny Kaspar was forced out due to some apparent racist remarks he made to the team. He led the Bobcats to a first place showing in the West and then this year led them to an overall first place showing. Given the circumstances in year one, I suppose there was some support for his selection based on that, in addition to their finishing first in the West. Unlike Kerns, he didn't inherit a program that had gone through eight straight losing seasons. Let's see if he (Johnson) deserved the award this year by winning when it counts.

What is a little concerning for me is that even though we came in 2nd place, we are 1-4 against the top three teams (TX St, Ga St, Troy). We were not able to win a game against 2 out of 3 of those teams. This reminds me of the Braves for a number of years in the past where they built up their record against all the lower teams but couldn't get it done in playoff time against the better competition. I want our team to succeed but also can't ignore the facts.

I hope for the best in the conference tournament.

While that is certainly true…. both games were very winnable. We can beat everyone in the SunBelt…… 1-0 today!
