MBB vs Georgia Southern, Thu 2/10 6:30pm
Thursday night the 1 game over .500 11-10 stink comes rolling into town to face our 15-10 Mountaineers.
Guard Elijah McCadden is shooting 53% from the field and averaging 12 points a game. Team PPG and points given up are basically identical. Really these two teams are very evenly matched.
ESPN BPI gives us a 78% chance to win.
We’re coming off a 1-1 Texas road trip where we looked bad to start both games, came back to win 1 and almost the other. We’ve got to get it going earlier than that. Can’t get into 15 point holes.

Both Georgia schools come to Boone hot, each having won three of four.
This is a huge week in the Belt. StAte travels to the Alabama schools and Texas State is in Louisiana. By the end of play on Saturday, there could be some real movement in the standings.
App 9-3
Troy 7-3
StAte 6-3
Texas St 6-3

Could be some movement. Bottom line is we just need to win. Schedule sets up nicely for us playing at home.

I hope Dustin Kerns glues his team's feet to the free throw line this week in practice. ABSOLUTELY CANNOT BE AS BAD AS WE'VE BEEN THUS FAR.

I knew ft shooting was an issue but had no idea we are dead last in the nation #358 for home ft shooting at 58.3 % Overall we are #337 & Ga. South #336 in rankings. Hopefully won't be a factor Thursday.

We would’ve beaten Texas State if JF had hit his FTs at the end.

Just looked at the national stats. It’s quite remarkable that we are sitting with this record. Horrible FT shooting, FG and 3 point FG percentages have us 250 and below. Appears that the saving grace is that we rank 30th in FG defense. If we don’t limit opponent shooting opportunities we are in deep doodoo. Whatever it takes I guess. You used to hear those stories of the “gym rat” guy who spent hours working on his shot and FT’s. Is that a thing of the past? Does the modern version of this guy just work on jacking 3’s?

We are what “they” call a volume 3 team. We are also “sum of our parts are greater than any individual “ type of team. Stats alone don’t tell our story….. it’s really a combination of stats that tell the picture. Also let’s be clear, we are a couple of games away from 4-5 th place. The other characteristic that stands out is our experience level. It shows up in the last 5 minutes of most games. It’s also why we typically don’t panic…. we know what we have to do and most of the time….. we do it. 1-0 baby…. take the stairs.

I agree, experience can make up for deficiencies in other areas. Of course, there are times when a lack of ability, in say, free throw shooting will come back to bite you. And, as you point out, the one stat that plays in our favor, reflects that our defense keeps us in games.AppFan11 wrote: ↑Tue Feb 08, 2022 9:05 amWe are what “they” call a volume 3 team. I’ve mentioned it before, but how does this happen when this was a strength for us last year with the same roster? We made great strides last season in free throw shooting. At least we are still a team that doesn’t put the opposing team at the foul line often.yosefederation wrote: ↑Mon Feb 07, 2022 7:21 pmI knew ft shooting was an issue but had no idea we are dead last in the nation #358 for home ft shooting at 58.3 % Overall we are #337 & Ga. 1000 FT's at the end of every single practice, or at 4:30 in the morning. Whatever it takes if we want to make it back to the dance this year.

Or if any combination of players had hit just 2 more shots of any type from the field.

Re: MBB vs Georgia Southern, Thu 2/10 6:30pm
I mean, yeah...but Justin Forrest was on the line with 3 free throws with a chance to tie or win. He's a season 73% free throw shooter so by the numbers he should've hit 2 of 3 which would've tied the game. Instead he missed all 3. How does our "Mr. Clutch" miss 3 of 3 with the game on the line?
As a team App State is in the bottom 30 NATIONALLY. That's pathetic.
It's ok to be critical appfanjj. It means you care enough to get upset when something that should have happened didn't.

I think it’s more than fair to be critical of JF for clanking 3 FT’s in that situation. I don’t believe any of us are calling him names, wanting him benched or kicked off the team but to say that was brutal is fair.
I’m old, slow and out of shape and if I tried to hit a 90 MPH fastball, shag a long fly or run the bases I’d fail. If I did anything on a football field I’d fail equally. I’d never dribble the ball up court or get a shot off against most any real basketball players but if I got to stand on the FT line with nobody guarding me and took 10 shots I’d like to think I could sink 5. If I quit working and practiced every day for a year and took 100 or more shots a day I’d like to think I could reach 70%. Now a 23 year old mid major college basketball player who does this all his life should certainly knock down 2 out of 3.

Thank you! And I hope Justin will use that situation as fuel to work his tail off this week practicing free throws.bigdaddyg wrote: ↑Tue Feb 08, 2022 4:23 pmI think it’s more than fair to be critical of JF for clanking 3 FT’s in that situation. If anyone didn't notice wear black and get $5 off ticket if bought at the ticket office Thursday. Wished I could make it up. Holding out hope for a special price on Saturday.
