Capel

Say what you will about Capel and why he was hired, or whether he should retain his job after this year, but each time we have a long break (Christmas and these last eight days), our guys come back really improved! I think he deserves some credit for that, at least.

For the record, I didn't think he was qualified for the job. I do think he deserves one more year.

He will get one more year to turn the corner because there is no way he gets bought out of his last year. I feel like he has improved and has a better relationship with the team. There was a funny moment during the game when Capel was frustrated with Tevin because he thought a foul had been called on him. Turns out the foul was on Utc and Tevin was trying to tell him everything was ok. Capel finally figured it out and laughed it off when Tevin told him he had to go shoot the free throws.

Playing some of their best ball going into the tourney. Hope they can make a little noise in Asheville! Capel will get one more year as he also has a few good recruits coming in and they might be lost if he is not here.

Really? We come back strong after a break? That's the dumbest thing I've ever read. That doesn't make you a good coach. What makes you a good coach is having your guys ready every game and actually getting better as a team and consistently beating the teams you are supposed to. Yea we crushed Chattanooga today. We are almost .500 on the season. How long ago were we losing by 40 to Davidson and then losing to a 6 win Citadel team? CAPEL DOES NOT DESERVE TO BE RETAINED! This experiment is over. I will debate this with anyone. The stats don't lie.

Do you really think he's going to maximize them? Good recruits mean nothing without coaching.

The only stat that matters is that we don't have the resources to buy him out. Unless you've got $150k stashed away then we're going to have Capel for next season. After that, we can move on and hope the next hire isn't dictated by some Chapel Hellion.

Sadly I know the reality of the situation.

The reality of the current situation is Capel just pulled out two must-win games at home and just had an ASU team put on one of the most dominant performances for 40 minutes I've seen since I've been here.

It's fair to be skeptical about this team's chances because of their inconsistencies, but a team with only 2 seniors just won a bye in the SoCon tourney and is playing their best basketball at the right time. Regardless of your feelings about Capel, he deserves credit for getting it done and in dominant fashion tonight.

UTC shot 42% from floor and missed 17 free throws. Was that due to an outstanding game play by our crack staff? UTC is just plain bad - RPI of 276. SAtill had Canty - who is a 43% from floor & 24% 3 pt line guy - not played the game of his career (10-15 from floor, 2-2 3-pt, 5-7 ft for 27 pts) it would have been closer. Capel had the best talent in the conference his first two seasons - including the pre-season player of the year both years - and did nothing with it. FYI, neither of those finished as post-season POY. Carter wasn't even starting at the end of his Sr season. Capel can't coach. Capel said he knew what was coming when Citadel ran a play for the lay up to go OT and beat us. He said the players didn't get it done. Uh... coach they killed us all night on backdoor cuts for lay ups and you didn't play zone the entire game! Basic middle school level adjustment. Never saw it.

Really? Two must win games for what? to get to 14-15. This is the 2012-13 SoCon where exactly 3 teams are over .500 on the season. Yea, lets start dusting off that mantle for coach of the year award. See this is why our program is in the tank. Becuase we accept this mediocrity. For as insane and irrational as our fans are about our SUCCESSFUL football program. We are oddly delusional about our basketball program.

If we make it to the So Con title game. I will eat more Crow than you can shake a stick at. But 14-15 is not going to cut it. Did I mention the SoCon has 3 teams with a winning record this year?

Capel has one more year, deal with it people. Get behind YOUR team no matter what and celebrate these little victories.

I'm pulling for Capel and Co for the next year, all App fans should be. We can seriously discuss if he should be retained next February, before then it isn't a realistic discussion.

We won - awesome, but I do not want anyone to tell me that Capel is a good coach and has this team "improving". This win is nothing but FOOL'S GOLD.

In all honesty, this one totally escapes me. Capel has had his problems and was thrown in with way too little experience, but I don't think he had anything close to the best talent in the conference for his first two seasons. He had several good players, and I agree they often failed to play up to their potential, but the overall team had almost NO depth, lots of player turnover both of those years, and once we got past the first 3-4 players the talent level dropped way off.

Yep. Capel is getting one more year, and I'm pulling for the App team regardless of who is coaching or playing.

That isn't my opinion but the opinion of several SoCon head coaches that was expressed to a college coach I know very well.

I think Sidney Lowe is available, if he doesn't have to build time for tax evasion. We could try him. There's also the guy that coached at Tennessee, Bruce Pearl. Dino Gaudio, maybe. Give it a year or two and Mark Gottfried should be available. :o And one of those guys sitting on K's bench is going to be let down when he isn't chosen to take his place and will look for somewhere to be a head coach.
There are plenty of decent alternatives, and yes, Capel has had his due. Time to roll his arse off the mountain.

How lucky are we, really, as a football school to have a guy who absolutely loves APP as much or more than we do and isn't looking to make APP a stepping stone? Gotta love Satt.

Ummm...you better knock on some wood.....If we have a string of winning seasons and are at the top of whatever conference we get in it would not surprise me at all if one day he takes a bigger job.

Are these the same SoCon head coaches of teams that should not be respected at all because all of SoCon basketball is loserville? Other teams in the SoCon are terrible so obviously they have bad coaches and are poor judges of talent, UNTIL we need them to make an assessment about how good the ASU talent base is?

This, and being able to afford not to retain him are two separate things. Can you pony up the cash for his buyout? If so, PLEASE DO! If not, chill out...we get it.
