Men's Hoops Scenarios

Key thing here is that App has to win to get that bye, If they lose, no bye, however we do fall to the other side of the bracket as #6 with no Davidson.

App State 9-8
Samford 9-8
Chattanooga 8-9
WCU 8-9

In these scenarios, GSU is only involved if they beat Davidson. If they lose, then they fall away.

App St beats UTC, Sam beats WCU and Dav beats GSU

4. App State 10-8 (beat Elon once)
5. Samford 10-8 (lost to Elon twice)
6. Chattanooga 8-10 (beat Elon once)
7. WCU 8-10 (lost to Elon twice)

App St beats UTC, Sam beats WCU and GSU beats Dav

4. App State 10-8 (beat Elon once)
5. Samford 10-8 (lost to Elon twice)
6. GSU (2-1, beat Dav twice)
7. WCU 8-10 (2-1, lost to Dav twice)
8. Chattanooga 8-10 (1-2)

App St beats UTC, WCU beat Sam and Dav beats GSU

4. App State 10-8 (beat Elon once)
5. Samford 9-9 (1-1 vs CofC)
6. WCU 9-9 (0-1 vs CofC)
7. Chattanooga 8-10

App St beats UTC, WCU beat Sam and GSU beats Dav

4. App State 10-8 (beat Elon once)
5. Samford 9-9 (1-1 vs CofC)
6. WCU 9-9 (0-1 vs CofC)
7. GSU (beat UTC)
8.. Chattanooga 8-10

UTC beats App St, Sam beats WCU and Dav beats GSU

4. Samford 10-8
5. Chattanooga 9-9 (UTC beat App twice)
6. App State 9-9
7. WCU 8-10

UTC beats App St, Sam beats WCU and GSU beats Dav

4. Samford 10-8
5. Chattanooga 9-9 (beat App twice)
6. App State 9-9
7. GSU 8-10 (split, beat Dav twice)
8. WCU 8-10 (split, lost to Dav twice)

UTC beats App St and WCU beats Sam, Dav/GSU result doesn't matter

4. Chattanooga 9-9 (5-1)
5. WCU 9-9 (3-3)
6. App State 9-9 (2-4, beat Elon once)
7. Samford 9-9 (2-4, lost to Elon twice)

I did not see us play Chucktown....sooo...

The only team that just plain handled us (that I saw) was Davidson.

If we get the 4 seed and win....then it is either get beat by Davidson in semi's or finals....

Either way season over and it is on to Baseball!

If the Mocs win and Western win, I believe they break the four way tie, and then after the top team is determined (in this case, Chattanooga), they would then treat it as a three way tie. Thus, Appalachian State would get the five seed, Samford the six for beating College of Charleston, and Western Carolina the seven.

I'm not sure if this accurate, but it was the way I understood it when I read the rules and went through the tiebreakers.

Probably does not REALLY matter, but I'd rather play Davidson before the tourney final than in the tourney final. They would probably beat us either way, but maybe (just maybe) you catch them looking ahead to the next game instead of being "geared up" for the championship game.

For now, I'd be satisfied just to see App beat UTC on Saturday and finish out the regular season on a positive note.

Another interesting scenario could play out between the 8-11 seeds.

UNCG plays at Elon tomorrow, Citadel plays at Wofford, and Georgia Southern plays at Davidson.

Currently they would be seeded like this:

8. Georgia Southern 7-10
9. Wofford 6-11 (even though they're tied with UNCG, they split in the regular season and beat Elon which is a better win than UNCG has at the moment)
10. UNCG 6-11
11. Citadel. 5-12

If Citadel beats Wofford, Wofford will become the 11 seed no matter what happens in the UNCG-Elon game. Wofford loses head to head versus Citadel and loses in a three way tie with UNCG and Citadel. UNCG regardless of result would be 9th and Citadel 10th.

If Wofford beats Citadel, Citadel will become the 11 seed. If UNCG loses to Elon then Wofford would be the 9 seed and UNCG the 10.

If Wofford and UNCG both win it comes down to what happens between the teams above them tomorrow for the 9/10 seed.

If Georgia Southern loses to Davidson tomorrow, Wofford beats Citadel and UNCG beats Elon, then Wofford becomes the 8 seed, Georgia Southern 9 and UNCG the 10 seed. Wofford would win the 3-way tie with UNCG and GSU. GSU and UNCG would still be tied with a 1-2 record in those games, and GSU beat UNCG so that solves that.

Georgia Southern is locked into the 8-9 game. Wofford controls their own destiny for the other spot in that game.

Be ready for a wild day of basketball.

If Georgia Southern beats Davidson, Chattanooga loses to App, and Western Carolina loses to Samford, Georgia Southern actually gets all the way up to the six seed, if I am understanding the tiebreaker correctly. So they are not locked into that 8/9 game yet....

I agree. The 8-11 seeds are even wilder than the 4-7 spots right now. At least in the 4-7, every team has played each other twice, creating a little bit more sensible way of viewing the ties.

You are correct but I do not see them beating Davidson twice in one year. Especially not on Davidson's senior night. I should have explained that better. I was meaning that at worst they are locked into that game.

Sort of a side issue, but if Georgia Southern did not have a coach worse than ours, they could be a top team in the conference.

Wow. We are are dreamers. Does a bye seem to translate to us being a good team?

Agreed. Very little chance of Georgia Southern beating Davidson for a second time....

No, but it helps our chances to win the whole thing, and at this point, all it takes is Davidson having one off-night and...why not us? (Davidson probably won't have an off-night and SHOULD steamroll into a 12 seed no matter what happens, but you see my point)

That's the beauty of March, friend.

A bye seems to translate very roughly into us being a better team than approximately 70% of the other teams in the SoCon. For a season that started off with a record of 1-7 and a team full of mostly young and relatively inexperienced players -- playing for a coach that is still trying to find his way -- earning a bye and even dreaming for a few hours about a tourney run is probably more than I expected back about Christmas time.

Just me, but I'll pull for these guys to win a home game on senior day and I'll enjoy it very much if they do it.

If I understand it correctly we would play the winner of the 5/12 game (Samford/Furman)

Rooting for losses and being a realist about what we are are two different things entirely. We are not a good team. Capel is not a good coach. This idea that we are going to morph into something resembling a good consistent program under Capel is not going to happen. You heard it here first.
