Stepping stone vs last stop

I’d love for app to be a highly desirable b-ball job but let’s face it, if fox had a great season...and got an offer, he’d have been gone faster than winds on grandfather. We ran off fancher for a big name...buzz...then his offspring...Capel and we were left in ruins. Do not hire an up and comer....they will leave ASAP and players don’t like change more than anyone else. Get a seasoned guy who likes boone, cold weather and wants to maybe make app his 401k. My 2cents but name me a few teams that are good with coaching changes every two-three years.

I believe Tom Apke saw us as an interim step to get back into the P5.Unfortunately Les Robinson prevented it.

Because of our budget (or lack of budget), App will always be in danger of being a "stepping stone" for coaches. We aren't unique in that respect so there is not reason to get upset about it. We have had pretty decent luck getting some longevity out of coaches occasionally. We can always hope for that person who falls in love with the High Country and decides to make it a permanent home.

The only longevity is when coaches work out their contract as opposed to being fired early...I haven’t seen longevity from good coaches...fancher was fired and he was the last coach that had success without looking elsewhere...(buckfuzz...twice)

True. If you're talking about basketball specifically I would have to agree. I'm not sure basketball is unique in this area though, so I was thinking across the spectrum.

Apke was pressured out.

To be clear, I'm not advocating for Apke to come back. Just that he was the last basketball coach I could think of who might have treated App as a destination spot. I'm okay rolling the dice on an up-and-comer. With a strong AD we should have a hit rate of 70%. If we do better than that, we're playing with house money. So far, I think DG has done well...Charlie, not so much!

Until we have more than 3,000 Yosef Club members, our coaches are going to be "catch & release".

This came up during the football coach hiring process, and I don't understand this line of thinking. In college basketball, unless you are a blue-blood like Kentucky, Kansas, Duke, UNC, etc. you are a stepping stone. And even some of those schools are stepping stones to the NBA. If you want someone who doesn't ever want to move to a bigger and better job than App State, you are going to get a washed up has-been or never-was. I'm fine with being a stepping stone because that means the guys (or girls!) who were here for just a few years won some dang basketball games.

Virginia Tech is about to find out it is a stepping stone with the other Buzz. Hell, UCLA is going after Tony Bennett.

Yes.I am very much aware of that. My point is that Tom was looking to rebuild his resume here and move on .Unfortunately ETSU’s all time teams coincided with his best squads , kept us out of the post season , and his plan never bore fruit. There was also the issue of a certain 7-1 Lithuanian center that we mishandled .....

Kansas was even a "stepping stone" for ol' Roy.

We're always going to be a stepping stone until we start doing something of value, like constantly getting bids to the NCAA Tourney or at least the NIT. Until then, we're just the team who has that viral video of us managing to not even get a free throw to the net.

Tell someone to call Alvin and get him back home. NO has been eliminated from the playoffs and his seat is a more than a little warm. He is mid 60s and should be set financially. With App and Soc Sec he can make 1/20th of what he is making now. Never hurts to ask........we are offering football recruits with multiple big time P5 offers.

Not gonna knock the sentiments of OP.

I feel like there will have to be decades of consistent championships and NCAA tourney invites/wins to not be a stepping stone.

This also applies to football.

The real topic should revolve around the question "how long will we allow a coach to remain employed in any sport with a losing record?"

Cobb set our program back a decade with his ham handed handling of the MBB program. I do think DG will make the hire that will turn the corner.

I would love for us to be a stepping stone. That would mean we were a successful mid-major program, likely making noise in the tournament. We are currently a dead end. We need someone to come in a complete shake things up.

Watching Wofford go toe-to-toe with Kentucky in the round of 32 while we sit on the couch year after year is a kick in the teeth. No offense to the Terriers, I hope they knock out the Wildcats.
