I was looking for a particular highlight when I came upon this on YouTube and I thought I'd share with the message board. It's a packed Varsity Gym playing against ETSU in 91'.

Remember that well, they have Calvin Talford and Keith Mister Jennings. Still the best game atmosphere of any in my whole 4 yrs in Boone!

To this day probably the best all around athlete out of SW-Virginia.

I was there, also. One morsel of trivia from back in those days is that Calvin Talford very nearly signed to play for "Apke's A-Team." The problem, of course, is that "very nearly signed" wasn't nearly close enough! Tom was dead certain he had Talford's firm commitment. The last weekend before signing day saw it all change. That made for quite a sad signing day in the Basketball Offices in VG/BK.**

** The BB offices in those days were actually in Broome-Kirk.

I miss Varsity. I know it's unrealistic and there are more reasons for building Holmes, but I wish somehow we could have just renovated Varsity and still played there. It's not like the arms race for building up football facilities....some of the best places in college basketball are the older and smaller gyms.

App State basketball used to be relevant and exciting. It was a true college basketball experience. Those days hold some of my best memories while a student at App. Varsity was packed and rowdy and we were good. To me, it is a shame that the current students are getting shortchanged by our program and have been for a while. I think if we put teams on the floor in Holmes like we did in Varsity it would be a totally different environment. Hoping things change. Soon.

It's a double edged sword really. It's hard to get students to show up and get excited about the teams we've had lately but it's also hard to get talented players excited to come and play in front of 10's of fans.

I know it is a difficult situation but there are ALOT of people out there that get paid nicely to turn things around. I would not say it's impossible.

Yes, nothing says advancement like bringing back someone who ended with back to back 20 loss seasons. But he did win Almost as many as he lost.

I’m in this camp. I know it’s kind of weird to say but Holmes being as far away as it is on campus eliminates any students just walking in after they eat central or walking by and seeing there is a game going on and stopping by.

I'm anxious to hear a reason any good recruit would be eager to join Appalachian State's basketball team. The scoreboard?

Not a troll, he is just towing the line. Didn't you know that the new scoreboards we going to get us the next Michael Jordan and John Elway. Unfortunately the new Jordan will be playing football and the Elway will be playing basketball.
