Hi Mountaineer Fans,

I am writing a comprehensive book entitled, “Moments of Glory: The Greatest Moments in Every Division I Team's College Basketball History” – and I need your help!

In a posted response on this thread, can you describe your choice for Appalachian State’s most glorious moment in their College Basketball history??? A “moment” can be a special, memorable play, game or season from the team’s past, or even a super-human individual performance by a player. Please be sure to consider any vintage moments that go back to the early days of Mountaineer basketball, as well as more recent moments that you think qualify as “momentous”.

You can as brief or as detailed in your response as you want to be. Every response counts ….. so I’d love to you hear from each of you! Thanks for your input!!!

Let’s Go Mountaineers,

Vince the Roundball Writer

For me (same as Stonewall) winning the Socon tourney in Roanoke in 1978. I got to attend the semi-finals and the championship game. Great time

I wasn't around for the first SoCon title, so for me it was winning the 2000 SoCon tourney (after losing in the final the previous two years). It's a sleeper entry on my "greatest sporting events attended in person" list.

I started in '82 and if I'm not mistaken Cremin's last season was maybe '81? Didn't we beat Dook that year? I also seem to recall hearing about a guy named Peyton who played during those years about 1980. I'm told we were pretty good.

Greatest moment might have included the Valerie Whiteside years. Lol

Beating Furman in Greenville in 79 to win SoCon regular season title. There was an ice storm in South Carolina that day but I and two other fans/idiots made the drive down to see the game. It was a weeknight game and we barely made it back to Boone in time for class the next day.

and another by the name of Darrel Robinson. In addition to being a great player then he turned out to be a great HS coach, a fantastic role model. He had great parents who often came to the games he coached, outstanding wife, and raised two great kids. We need more like Coach Rob

Winning the Puerto Rico shootout with Fancher, against UVa., Central Fla. and Vandy just after the football team three peated.

Also wins against Nebraska, SMU (twice), Washington State in a holiday tourney during Apke's day. Then Fancher got a good win against Arkansas in 2008 I believe.

In addition, I ll agree to the departure or Capel and before that when "He who must not be named." left.....again.

May not be #1, but I loved the win at Davidson on 1/20/07. Back and forth classic battle involving a freshman named Curry. As App iced it at the line 81-74, the chant of ASU rocked the Davidson gym.

Many have been mentioned. But one of my favorite was when I went as a kid and watched us beat Nebraska at Varsity Gym. Nebraska went 20-10 and had 1st Rd draft pick Eric Piatkowski and we held him down with Ricky Ned's, probably one of the best defenders we've ever had.

The '99-'00 season was the greatest in my opinion. The last season in Varsity gym and we sent it out in style. Not only did the team win, but they broke school records along the way, namly Rufus as a walk-on, breaking the all-time 3-pointers made in a season record with over 100 in the regular season. They then capped it off by finally winning the SoCon tourney and going to the Dance... only to have tragedy strike months later when Rufus passed.
