Schadenfreude aside, Buzz's firing at UNCW probably doesn't help our cause. Another mid-major program from in-state that you would think might target some of the same candidates. Hopefully we'll reverse recent history and offer a salary competitive with what they'll offer.

According to reliable sources the players wanted Mc then.....they were asked what they thought of capel and all spoke highly of him and genuinely liked and respected him but expected/wanted McMahon to get the hire.

Buzz's original contract "broke the bank" at UNCW, if I remember, their were board members who complained that his contract was too expensive, I cant imagine they will spend that kind of money again. If we cant outbid these guys for a coach, something is very wrong.

Can and will are two different things, I bet.

Reading McMahon's bio I think his undergrad work in Marketing should be a big factor in attracting more fans to Holmes.

I thought Cobb said the reason he took a chance on Capel is because the players wanted him to be their coach. Sumthin ain't exactly adding up here.
Sims also tweeted that he enjoyed playing for Capel.

Really glad Donald still follows App so closely. Wish he could still suit up. One of the best to ever come through Boone.

And Donald Sims was recruited by Matt McMahon....along with DJ Thompson, Jeremy Clayton, Nate Cranford, Kellen Brand...ya know most of the players that led to the most successful 4 years in the history of the program.

Well Matt can't be a candidate yet. Murray St is in the CIT.
That's what I do. I gripe and I know things.

I don't see the McMahon hiring happening, even if it is a good fit.

If Cobb hires McMahon, he will basically be admitting he was wrong (save all the booster influence hearsay superfans; tired of hearing it) and that he wasted our time the last four years.

By screwing up four years ago, he has to move in a direction other than McMahon. Thus, the statement about hiring someone with HC experience.

I do not doubt that one bit. Enjoying playing for someone and wanting them to be your HC are two separate issues.

Agreed. Sims is now rooting for someone that won't be his HC. My point was just that Sims' one tweet does not necessarily mean Cobb was misleading.

I don't know if Cobb WILL take that approach, but he shouldn't. He needs to find a coach who can win and generate fan interest. If the guy he hires is successful, it will reflect well on Cobb, regardless of what happened in the past.

Besides, I'd guess a large segment of App fans don't know or don't care about any drama around MM last time around. And I guarantee that's the case for most current and future students. Most of them have probably never heard of McMahon.

I agree easthall - most fans have no idea of what went on back then and in no way do I think CC will be admitting he made a mistake - heck, everyone including him already knows how the Capel thing turned out - every AD in the country has made a hire that didn't turn out the way he/she had hoped - got to move on ---

At this point admitting the obvious doesnt gain anyone anything. What I want to hear is. " I learned some valuable lessons.... and I'm getting more help with this hire"

He said in the press conference that there would be a committee involved in the process.

Cobb is nobody's dummy and was clever to spin those comments into a validation for hiring Capel. He couldn't go public with the real reason (Mark Harrell) and there was nothing he could use to support hiring a guy with 1 year experience as a third assistant. Thus the "I did it for the players" angle. In doing so he also left himself an out if the thing fell apart. Not my fault, that's what those players wanted.

So what Greer, tired of hearing fact? especially when it does not fit into your myopic view?
Has nothing to do with admitting wrong, has everyting to do with being able to identify and hire the right candidate for the job, whomever that person is.
